Johnny Damon Rumors: Damon Still Waiting for “Right Team”

facebooktwitterreddit

We’ve now entered the first weekend of March, and veteran free agent Johnny Damon has yet to find a team for the 2012 season.  Time may appear to be running out for Damon, but according to his agent Scott Boras, the 38-year-old is still working out while waiting for the “right team” to make him an offer.

While speaking with Tim Dierkes MLBTR.com yesterday, Boras said that his client is still at home keeping himself in the best shape he can.  Boras indicated that Damon is waiting on the “right team” to give him a call.

The way the offseason has gone for Damon, you’d have to figure he’s waiting for any team to give him a call.

Though several clubs, including the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees, have been tied to Damon this offseason, the veteran hasn’t received much interest in general.  Damon is convinced he can still be an asset in the field, but teams appear to view him more as a designated hitter.  These roles are currently limited, and some suspect Damon will have to take an even more reduced role in 2012 if he wishes to continue his playing career.

Still, Boras wasn’t ready to concede that his client was finished looking for a major league contract.  Boras reminded Dierkes that Damon was “about the third-best DH” in the American League last season.  While he’s confident that teams are currently looking at youth, Boras believes they will be viewing things differently by the time spring training ends.

Where do you see Damon landing, and what role do you think he’ll play in 2012?
