MLB Trade Rumors: Blue Jays, Red Sox Targeting White Sox Gavin Floyd?

facebooktwitterreddit

Nick Carfado of the Boston Globe is reporting that the teams targeting one more starting pitcher this spring are keeping tabs on Chicago White Sox right-hander Gavin Floyd.  Carfado said the White Sox are not actively shopping Floyd, but he believes Chicago’s general manager Kenny Williams will be willing to trade his starter if he receives a “decent bounty in return”.  Carfado noted that the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays “could be in play” for Floyd.

Floyd was one of Chicago’s pair of starting pitchers to have their names floated in trade rumors this offseason.  While the White Sox eventually extended John Danks, Floyd is entering the final guaranteed year of his current contract.  Beyond 2012, the White Sox hold a $9.5 million team option for Floyd next season.

For this reason, many expect the White Sox to entertain offers for Floyd this season and next offseason.  While most assumed Floyd would enter the season as a member of Chicago’s rotation, Carfado believes the club may be willing to deal the 29-year-old this spring.

The Red Sox and Blue Jays been tied to free agent starting pitchers this offseason such as Roy Oswalt and Yu Darvish, and Carfado named the pair as teams that could be in play for Floyd.

Last season for the White Sox, Floyd maintained an ERA and WHIP of 4.37 and 1.162 over his 30 starts spanning 193 2/3 innings pitched.  It was the fourth straight season in which Floyd totaled at least 30 starts and 187 1/3 frames.
