Mike Gonzalez Rumors: Gonzalez Expected to Sign Soon

Over the past month, it has appeared that the Texas Rangers and free agent reliever Mike Gonzalez would eventually reach an agreement.  The mutual interest was there and rumors tied the two parties together.  However, it was apparently not to be as the Rangers have told T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com that they expect Gonzalez to sign elsewhere and soon.

Last week the Rangers spoke with Gonzalez and his agent, Scott Boras.  Texas offered the left-hander a non-roster offer, meaning that he would have to earn a spot in their bullpen this spring.  Gonzalez reportedly thanked the Rangers for the time he spent with them last season, but said he is looking for a guaranteed major league deal this spring.

This is something that the Rangers are not willing to extend Gonzalez at this time, and the club has said they expect the left-hander to sign somewhere else in the near future.  With Gonzalez out of the picture, the Rangers have said that they are still seeking players who can bolster their left-handed relief options.

Last Friday, Boras said that there are many teams interested in Gonzalez.  While it’s easy to scoff at Boras and his ‘many teams’, it does appear that clubs outside of the Rangers have interest in Gonzalez.  Boras indicated that his client’s delayed signing has had more to do with Gonzalez taking his time to make the right choice rather than there being a lack of options to choose from.
