Jose Reyes Thinks New York Mets Should Re-Sign David Wright

The New York Mets honored former shortstop Jose Reyes when he returned to Citi Field Tuesday night by showing a short video tribute.  While this may have been the Mets organization’s attempt at a ‘no hard feelings’, New York’s fans sent an entirely different message.  According to Kevin Kernan of the New York Post, the Mets small but boisterous crowd ‘welcomed’ Reyes back by showering him with boos.

For Reyes’s part, he said there were no hard feelings.  There were shouts of ‘traitor’ and other ill-willed remarks thrown Reyes’s way, but the shortstop said that he didn’t come back to New York to worry about that.  Instead, Reyes came back to play baseball.

Reyes offered his take on the Mets decision to let him walk this past offseason.  According to Reyes, he understands that baseball “is a business”.  Reyes said that because the Mets didn’t offer him “anything”, that told him that New York didn’t want him to player there anymore.

The Mets are approaching another decision on whether or not they’ll keep a home-grown star in third baseman David Wright.  A five-time All-Star, Wright is in the final guaranteed year of his deal with the Mets.  Beyond this season, New York holds a $16 million club option for Wright which includes a $1 million buyout.

Reyes offered the Mets some advice on how they should handle Wright and his next contract.  Reyes told Kernan that New York should re-sign Wright.  Reyes went on to say that it will be “good” for the Mets if they are able to lock Wright up long-term because “he’s a symbol of the game”.
