Bobby Abreu has reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, Abreu and the Dodgers have an agreement that will see the veteran become a bench player and part-time outfielder for the club.  Abreu was released by another Los Angeles team, the Angels, last week.

Yesterday, Heyman reported that the Dodgers were expressing interest in Abreu.  Heyman said that Los Angeles and Abreu were engaged in “serious talks”.  While a deal wasn’t yet finalized, Heyman said that the sides were left working out the details.

Before releasing him, the Angels attempted to trade Abreu but to no avail.  No teams were apparently willing to take on the salary required by the Angels, though once he was released there was reportedly several teams showing interest in Abreu.

The Dodgers currently have an outfield consisting of Matt Kemp in center, Andre Ethier in right, and Juan Rivera, Tony Gwynn Jr. and Jerry Hairston Jr. in left.  Abreu will add another left-handed bat to the mix.

While Ethier and especially Kemp have been beyond solid posting OPSs of .910 and 1.373, the Dodgers haven’t gotten much production at all from their trio of left fielders.  Over their 25 games played, LA’s left fielders have combined to post an OPS of .647.

While Abreu was clamoring for consistent at-bats this spring, his signing with the Dodgers with the role currently attached to him may signal him attmitting that he is no longer a full-time player.
