Will Middlebrooks back in lineup

23-year-old Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks is back in the lineup after missing Saturday’s game with cramping in his left hamstring.

The young 3B has had three hits in his first nine MLB at-bats, including two in his debut against the Oakland Athletics. He also drew a walk against the A’s on his first plate appearance. After the walk, he stole second base. His first hit came on an infield single which showed some more hustle from Middlebrooks; one of the reasons why he’s an endearing player for some.

In the seventh inning of the game on the 2nd of May, Middlebrooks uncorked a double to right to bring things to 2-2 for him. In his final trip to the plate, the third baseman lined out and is making the most of his playing time while Kevin Youkilis is still on the shelf with tightness in the lower left part of his back.

He will be ready to face the rising Baltimore Orioles, who defeated the Boston Red Sox yesterday behind another fine outing from starting pitcher Jason Hammel. Before being called up, Will Middlebrooks had an outstanding 190 wRC+ in 100 plate appearances at AAA.

ZiPS projects a 1.5 WAR year from the 3B with about average defense, some pop (13 homers), and a .308 wOBA overall. That’s not bad for a third baseman, and Middlebrooks is proving to be a more than viable backup at third base.
