MLB Recaps: Matt Joyce Powers Rays Past Yankees

Matt Joyce and the Tampa Bay Rays powered past the New York Yankees last night. Joyce’s ninth inning three-run home run was the difference, propelling the Rays to a 4-1 victory and moving them back into sole possession of first place in the American League East.
Remember Mariano Rivera? The Yankees and their fans sure do. After young starter David Phelps and the Yankees bullpen pieced together a scoreless eight innings of work, Rivera’s stand-in, David Robertson, came apart in the 9th.
Robertson walked one and surrendered three hits, the last being a three-run home run to Joyce. Another run was eventually attributed to Robertson, who surrendered his first runs of the season.
American League
Toronto Blue Jays – 5
Oakland A’s – 2
Blue Jays starter Brandon Morrow held the A’s to one run over six innings and Casey Janssen picked up his first save since taking over closing duties in Toronto. Adam Lind, J.P. Arencibia and Edwin Encarnacion all homered for the Blue Jays.
Texas Rangers – Postponed
Baltimore Orioles – Postponed
Postponed due to rain.
Chicago White Sox – 8
Cleveland Indians – 1
Jake Peavy continued his hot start, picking up his fourth win and lowering his ERA to 1.89. Adam Dunn hit his 10th home run of the season for the White Sox.
Boston Red Sox – 3
Kansas City Royals – 4
The Royals and Bruce Chen bested Jon Lester and the Red Sox. Kansas City’s bullpen held on as Jonathan Broxton collected his 7th save of the season.
Los Angeles Angels – 6
Minnesota Twins – 2
Erwin Santana and the Angels bullpen held the Twins to six hits on the night. Mike Trout went 3-5 with two doubles, RBIs and runs scored and Albert Pujols drove in a pair of runs for the Angels.
Detroit Tigers – 1
Seattle Mariners – 2
John Jaso’s RBI single in the 8th was the difference in this one. Jason Vargas logged eight strong frames for the Mariners, holding the Tigers to a single run on five hits.
National League
Cincinnati Reds – 2
Milwaukee Brewers – 1
All of the scoring in this one took place in the game’s final frame. Johnny Cueto went seven scoreless for the Reds while Zack Greinke did one better for the Brewers, allowing only two hits while striking out 11.
Atlanta Braves – 0
Chicago Cubs – 1
Bryan LaHair’s hot start continued, as the first baseman drove in the game’s lone run in the 7th. Each starter, Tim Hudson for the Braves and Paul Maholm for the Cubs, went seven frames.
Colorado Rockies – 6
San Diego Padres – 2
Other than starting pitcher Christian Friedrich, everyone in the Rockies starting lineup collected at least one hit. Wilin Rosario and Chris Nelson each chipped in a pair of RBIs for Colorado.
New York Mets – 10
Philadelphia Phillies – 6
Despite the return of Cliff Lee, the Phillies managed to blow two more leads against the Mets last night. Philadelphia’s bullpen surrendered eight runs (seven earned) over their three innings of work. Mets hitters combined for eight extra base hits against the struggling Phillies.
Washington Nationals – 2
Pittsburgh Pirates – 4
The Pirates used a three-run third inning to get past the Nationals on a night where their starter, Erik Bedard, only lasted an inning due to back spasms. Andrew McCutchen led the way for the Pirates, tallying four hits, including a home run.
Miami Marlins – 5
Houston Astros – 3
Houston scored in the bottom of the 9th to extend this one, and it ultimately took 12 innings for a winner to be named. Omar Infante provided the deciding blow with his two-run single.
St. Louis Cardinals – 7
Arizona Diamondbacks – 2
Neither pitching staff was particularly great, but the Cardinals were able to cash in on timely hits. Rafael Furcal collected four singles for St. Louis, while Matt Holliday went 2-4 with two doubles and RBIs.
San Francisco Giants – 2
Los Angeles Dodgers – 6
The Dodgers became the latest club to get to Giants starter Tim Lincecum, tallying eight hits and four runs against the Freak over his five innings of work. Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley wasn’t much better, but LA’s ‘pen hung shutout the Giants over the game’s final five innings.
