The Philadelphia Phillies have placed Roy Halladay on their 15-day disabled list with a strained latissimus dorsi.  While Halladay will avoid surgery, the Phillies ace is expected to be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks due to the injury.  Philadelphia is hoping Vance Worley can return from the disabled list in time to take Halladay’s spot in their rotation.

Halladay left his most recent start Sunday after logging only two innings.  Halladay complained of a sore shoulder and the combination of his discomfort and recent drop in velocity had many worried the injury was serious.

An MRI revealed the strain and, while Halladay will be sidelined for a significant portion of time, he will be able to avoid undergoing major surgery that would keep him out for the remainder of the season.

At this point the Phillies have said that Halladay will be shut down for three weeks before he is reevaluated to resume throwing.  Philadelphia hopes Halladay can rejoin their rotation in six-to-eight weeks.

Halladay’s injury and stint on the DL marks the first time the right-hander has hit the shelf due to an arm-related injury since 2004 when he was still a member of the Toronto Blue Jays.  Over his 11 starts this season, Halladay had maintained an ERA and WHIP of 3.89 and 1.147.

Philadelphia is hoping they will get Vance Worley back from injury in time to take Halladay’s spot in their rotation.  Worley threw a bullpen session yesterday and is scheduled to throw another on Friday.
