St. Louis Cardinals Notes: Skip Schumaker, Matt Carpenter Could Return Soon

According to B.J. Rains of Fox Sports Midwest, Skip Schumaker and Matt Carpenter could return to the St.

Louis Cardinals lineup during the team’s road trip to Detroit.  Schumaker has been on the disabled list since May 30th when he pulled his hamstring in a game against the Atlanta Braves.  Carpenter has been sidelined since May 23rd because of a strained right side.

The Cardinals have fallen off the early season pace they had set.  As of today, St. Louis is 33-31 and three games back of the Cincinnati Reds.  The team hopes getting both of these players back will give them a boost.  The Reds have been hot of late, and the Pirates have been playing well enough to earn second place for now.

When Schumaker hit the disabled list, he was batting .321/.378/.432.  The 32-year old outfielder was having a big start to the season, potentially on his way to his best season since 2007.  Schumaker has spent his entire career with the Cardinals and is a lifetime .291/.347/.380 hitter.

Carpenter came out of nowhere become a fan favorite in St. Louis and surprise fans across baseball.  He is in just his second year in the big leagues, and so far this season, he’s impressed.  At the time of his DL stint, Carpenter was hitting .288/.356/.519 with 3 home runs.

Should both Schumaker and Carpenter return next week, the Cardinals will have to make some moves to open up space on the 25-man roster.
