Injury Update: Jose Buatista, David Ortiz

facebooktwitterreddit

Jose Bautista fell to the ground in agony.  David Ortiz limped off the field after scoring on a home run.

Both superstars injured in the same night with what could have been severe injuries.  However, neither seems too severe.

Bautista was placed on the 15-day DL with a wrist strain.  X-Rays last night were negative, and the Blue Jays slugger is hopeful he will return as soon as he is eligible to come off the DL.  Based on the pain Bautista was in at the time of the injury, the fact that it is a strain is a relief for those in Toronto and those who love watching Bautista play.

Ortiz will miss about a week according to ESPN Boston’s Joe McDonald.  He injured his Achilles tendon but an MRI revealed no tear.  The Red Sox haven’t placed the power-hitting DH on the DL yet, but they will consider it after Ortiz receives a second opinion in Miami.

Bautista was leading the league in home runs with 27.  Adam Dunn has since passed him and has 28.  Bautista recently made it to the final round of the Home Run Derby before ultimately falling to Prince Fielder.  This year marked his third consecutive All-Star appearance.

Ortiz is leading the American League in OPS with 1.024.  He is third in all of baseball for OPS behind Andrew McCutchen and another injured slugger, Joey Votto.  Despite all the distractions, Ortiz has been a source of constant power and timely hitting for the Red Sox this season.

Should Ortiz be placed on the DL as well, the league will be missing three of its top sluggers in Jose Bautista, David Ortiz, and Joey Votto.
