Kansas City Royals Claim Quintin Berry Off Waivers

Outfielder Quintin Berry has been claimed off of waivers by the Kansas City Royals and optioned to Triple-A Omaha, according to a release by the team. Berry had been designated for assignment by the Detroit Tigers on Sunday when the team re-acquired Francisco Martinez from the Seattle Mariners.

To say that Berry has struggled at the plate this year is a bit of an understatement. The 28 year old has mustered just a .168/.278/.234 line in 199 PA with Detroit’s Triple-A affiliate in Toledo. The production is a far cry from the .261/.354/.332 career line he’s posted over the past eight years in the minor leagues. He’s stolen 15 bases in 49 games on the year and has been solid defensively, but he’s done little else to warrant a spot on an organization’s 40-man roster and it is unknown what the Royals plans for him are moving forward.

Berry spent most of 2012 in the Major Leagues with the Tigers, hitting .258/.330/.354 in 330 PA while seeing time across all three outfield positions. He stole 21 bases in limited playing time as well, but Berry offers little that the Royals aren’t already receiving from other players.
