The Price of a Win in Baseball: Paying The Least
5. Miami/Florida Marlins (370 wins, $294MM payroll, $795k per win)
Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports
Sometimes we still get caught up in the spending spree prior to the 2012 season. We tend to forget that this team doesn’t spend just to spend. Sometimes, they just don’t spend. We think more of the Fish as the club that dumps the salary rather than add to it. Could lead you to believe that they should have spent less for a win…until you realize the Marlins haven’t posted a winning season since 2009.
Since the beginning of the century, the Marlins have only once topped $60MM as their Opening Day payroll ($60.4MM in 2005) aside from 2012.
