5. New York Mets (374 wins, $606.9MM payroll, $1.623MM per win)

For the first three years of this study, the Mets spent some dough. In each of those years, their payroll was in excess of $125MM. They simply haven’t had the results to show for that spending.

Over the past two years, the payroll has dipped below $100MM, but they still do not have the results. Of course, some will point to the Bernie Madoff deal along with the lawsuits that have followed as to why the payroll has lessened. Others state those situations have little to no bearing on what the team has been willing to spend.

The win total of 374 ranks 24th among all teams. Not too difficult to wonder why they’re a top 5 club in relation to this.
