Texas Rangers catcher Geovany Soto was arrested on Wednesday night on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge. He was released on $500 bail, according to reports.

The incident took place in Grapevine, Texas – a town just north of Arlington, where the Rangers call home. Specific details regarding why Soto was stopped by police are not known, but the 31 year old is at least owning up to the mistake:

"I was stopped by Grapevine Police on Wednesday night. I am embarrassed and would like to apologize to my family, the Rangers organization, and our fans that I was taken in on this charge. Because this is an ongoing case, I cannot discuss this matter any further at this time."

It remains to be seen whether Major League Baseball will take any action against Soto for this incident, but the league has been notified by the team.

Soto has been rehabbing after undergoing knee surgery in late March, one of the many injuries that the Rangers have been forced to cope with on the year. The club had been optimistic that he’d potentially be able to return to the active lineup after the All Star Break. Soto has hit just .222/.293/.405 in 348 plate appearances since joining the Rangers midway through the 2012 season and will be a free agent this winter.
