First baseman Paul Goldschmidt, easily the best player on the Arizona Diamondbacks was place on the disabled list Saturday with a fractured left hand. The All-Star sustained the injury after being hit by a pitch from Ernesto Frieri in the ninth-inning of the Diamondbacks loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night.

He took his base, remaining in the game until it ended, trying to stay positive. Unfortunately staying positive will not cure a broken hand.

"“I was holding out hope,” Goldschmidt said. “I was staying pretty positive, wasn’t trying to think about it being broken. But I knew it was a possibility.”"

His had was indeed broken and now it appears that the 26-year old two-time All-Star’s season is over. With just about eight weeks left in the 2014 regular season and the Diamondbacks having no chance of a post-season birth manager Kirk Gibson announced Sunday,

"“Realistically it’s eight weeks. So he’s done. If you rush it, then you end up injuring it and you displace the fracture,” Gibson said. “I think you’re looking at worse things.”"

Goldschmidt is just another loss for the struggling Diamondbacks who currently have 10 players on the disabled list. However, Goldschmidt is undoubtedly the most important one. He is leading the team in nearly every offensive category including batting average, doubles, home runs and WAR.
