UPDATE: According to Mike Axisa of CBSSports,

"“Headley went for x-rays and other neurological tests on Friday morning, and everything came back clean, the team announced. No fractures, no concussion, nothing like that. Headley did need a few stitches but otherwise escaped without major injury. He has since rejoined the Yankees and is day-to-day for the time being.”"

New York Yankees’ infielder Chase Headley was hit in the face with a 96 mph fastball from Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Jake McGee on Thursday night.

Strangely enough the incident was around the same time the leader for the National League MVP award, Miami Marlins’ outfielder Giancarlo Stanton was also struck in the face by a fastball from Milwaukee Brewers’ pitcher Mike Fiers.

This kind of thing does not happen every day, but to two players in the same night? That’s just crazy.

Stanton’s injuries were much more visible and obviously serious than Headley’s but just because Headley was not bleeding profusely after being hit doesn’t mean that his injury won’t end up being just as serious.

Headley’s tests did not show any fractures like Stanton’s but he did require stitches on his chin, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. Headley was able to stand up and walk from the field.

He may have also suffered a concussion which can leave lasting effects on anyone. He will be seen by a neurologist and manager Joe Girardi is hopeful though that Headley will be able to rejoin the team soon.

"“He’ll see the neurologist [Friday] and then determine what’s next.” Girardi said.“Hopefully he can join us fairly quickly.”"

The Yankees, like the Marlins, are still just barely clinging to the hope that they may be able to steal a playoff spot at the last minute and let their Captain Derek Jeter, who announced his retirement at the end of the season back in February, play in one final postseason.
