Cole Hamels, Jeff Samardzija and the Latest Chicago Trade Rumors

Cole Hamels

Despite it seeming like Hamels would remain with the Phillies, talks are still ongoing between the Phils and a number of other teams, including the Chicago Cubs, according to CSN Chicago. Hamels is still owed a massive amount of money by the Phillies and he has three years left on his contract including an option for another.

Despite the asking price, the Cubs, and any team for that matter, would be well-served in picking up the starter. Being on the bottom-feeding Phillies has not completely destroyed his ability to pitch effectively and given a change to a playoff-bound team, Hamels could find new life.

That being said, the asking price is still incredibly high and the jury is still out over whether or not the Phillies are even ready to let their pride and joy go.

Jeff Samardzija

The Chicago White Sox are toeing the line between contention and selling. The American League Central is ripe with opportunity but the White Sox have not been able to capitalize on any openings that have been provided. As such, Samardzija is just as in the blue as everyone else.

CSN Chicago spoke with Samardzija after his most recent start. “It has been totally silent on my end,” he told reporters. The White Sox had discussed moving Samardzija to the Houston Astros but they went ahead with acquiring Scott Kazmir, which could very easily raise Samardzija’s value as another starting pitcher comes off the market.

The Sox are looking for a huge return for Samardzija despite a mixed-results type of season. As we have seen with Cole Hamels, such a return is unlikely.

David Price

David Price has been perpetually on the trade block for what seems like the majority of his career. However, the Detroit Tigers have not confirmed if he is on their trade block yet or not.

Regardless, the Chicago Cubs are interested as they look to add some needed pitching help for a playoff push. While the Cubs were once in close contention, they are starting to lose ground and need outside help if they want hope for a post season.

However, reports also indicate that the Cubs are not interested in overpaying for what they would consider a rental.

That may very well eliminate 30-year old Price who is a free agent at the end of the year.
