Pittsburgh Pirates outright Vance Worley to Triple-A

The Pittsburgh Pirates have outrighted pitcher Vance Worley to Triple-A Indianapolis, according to the MLB.com transactions page. The 27-year-old had been placed on waivers on July 30.

Worley had solid numbers on the season prior to being waived, posting a 3.78 ERA in 20 appearances (eight start). However, he’d struggled more recently, giving up eight runs across his final six appearances with the Pirates. The combination of the recent poor outings and Worley’s $2.45-million price tag this year  were likely what allowed him to slide through waivers unclaimed.

Pittsburgh will hope that Worley can rediscover his success from a season ago in the minors, as he went 8-4 with a 2.85 ERA and a career-best 1.21 WHIP across 110.2 innings (17 starts). With Worley under team control through 2018, he could still prove to be a bargain in future years if he can post numbers even close to those of a season ago going forward.
