ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin reports that the New York Mets have acquired reliever Addison Reed from the Arizona Diamondbacks. The deal is pending a physical, and the D’backs will receive two prospects from New York if the deal goes through.

Reed struggled in 2015 with Arizona, posting a 4.20 ERA across 40.2 innings with a pair of losses and career high 3.1 BB/9 rate. After recording 101 saves between 2012-2014, the former top prospect and closer recorded just two saves in 2015 before Brad Ziegler took over for the Diamondbacks’ full-time closer.

The Mets will hope that Reed will instead bring his post-All Star Break numbers to New York. Reed has a 1.65 ERA with a .627 OPS against in 16.2 innings after the All-Star break at the big-league level. The 26-year-old also thrived in minimal minor-league action, giving up up just two runs while striking out 11 batters across 11 appearances (10.2 innings) at AAA Reno.

While it’s a small sample size, the Mets will likely need whatever bullpen help they can get down the stretch as they look to manage the innings of young starters like Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. Whether he slides into the seventh inning role in front of Tyler Clippard and Jeurys Familia or ends up in a less defined role, the heavily-taxed Mets pen will benefit from adding a less-used arm into the mix for the final month of the season.

Reed joins the Mets with two years of arbitration remaining, though considering his $4.88-million salary in 2015, New York could elect to non-tender him and either look elsewhere next year or re-sign him at a more reasonable price tag.
