Milwaukee Brewers’ Elian Herrera injured after collision

Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Elian Herrera experienced a scary moment in Saturday night’s loss to the Cincinnati Reds. In the eighth inning, Herrera collided with left fielder Shane Peterson as they attempted to catch a fly ball off the bat of Skip Schumaker.

Both were shaken up on the play, but Herrera’s condition immediately appeared the more serious. He remained motionless for several minutes and was eventually removed from the field at Miller Park on a stretcher. Peterson exited the game as well.

According to MLB.com’s Brewers writer Adam McCalvy, Herrera received an X-ray at the stadium on his right thigh, which came back negative. He was later seen in the clubhouse on crutches, having been diagnosed with a deep bruise.

Prior to Sunday’s series finale, Herrera addressed the media, explaining that the injury initially felt much more severe:

The 30-year-old Herrera has appeared in 83 games for the Brew Crew this season, his fourth in the major leagues. He is slashing .242/.290/.395 with seven home runs and 33 RBI.

While there is no specific indication yet as to how long Herrera may be sidelined, the Brewers would miss his ability to play multiple positions around the field. The bulk of his appearances this year have come at second and third base, but he has also filled in at all three outfield spots as well.

Hernan Perez started at third base in place of Herrera on Sunday, and he will presumably continue to do so for the time being.
