In a recent interview, Mets GM Sandy Alderson explained that the Mets were done adding any players to their roster for this off season. He believes that they have made great moves to ensure that they can make another run at a World Series title. That being said, the Mets were no strangers to roster changes this offseason; the even lost key pieces from their National League Pennant winning team.

More from New York Mets

Coming off one of their best seasons in recent memory, the Mets were under a great deal of pressure to bolster their lineup and retain the key pieces that helped them get to the World Series. The action began when they traded away starting pitcher Jon Niese to the Pittsburgh Pirates for second baseman Neil Walker.

Their next big move came as an attempt to shore up their infield when they signed former Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to a two-year deal with a club option for the third year. The biggest blow was not in any addition or subtraction, but rather in what didn’t happen.

The offseason began with the Mets going after utility man Ben Zobrist. Many signs indicated that he would indeed sign with the Mets and provide the much-needed power bat in their lineup. Unfortunately, he decided to sign with the Chicago Cubs and Mets fans were left dejected.

This dejected feeling only continued when Daniel Murphy signed with the Washington Nationals. It was obvious that the Mets were not going to be able to retain Murphy, as his asking price was astronomical and impossible for the Mets to match.

Spirits were lifted when the team announced that they had re-signed veteran pitcher Bartolo Colon to a one year deal. In a move to again, provide depth and skill to their lineup, the Mets added left handed outfielder, Alejandro De Aza to their roster.

Many fans saw this as a bad signing based on the fact that there is no need for another outfielder on the roster. It is likely however, that Met fans need not worry. In a recent press conference, Sandy Alderson said that he believes De Aza could be traded before the season starts.

Mets fans rejoiced when, finally, after months of talks and discussion, the team re-signed outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to a three-year contract with an opt out after one year. This deal has been touted as a great deal for the organization, even though it gives Cespedes a large chunk of money upfront. It provides the huge power bat that the Mets need and gives them a lot of wiggle room when it comes to setting their line up every day.

Cespedes was the centerpiece of the Mets roster that made an improbable run to the playoffs in the fall of 2015. With the re-addition of Mr. Cespedes, the Mets lineup is primed and ready to make another run at the Fall Classic.
