The Philadelphia Phillies add high school outfielder Mickey Moniak with the first overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft.

The last time the Philadelphia Phillies had the number one pick in the draft they drafted Pat Burrell. All Burrell did was be a part of two World Series championship teams, including with Phillies in 2008 and have multiple 30 home run and 100 RBI seasons.  The Phillies can hope that their latest number one pick is a part of that.

The Phillies selected high school outfielder Mickey Moniak from La Costa Canyon High School in California with the first pick in the 2016 MLB Draft. He is the first outfielder to go number one since Bryce Harper in 2010 (he’s pretty good)

Moniak was the fifth overall prospect according to MLB.com.

More from Call to the Pen

Moniak played in 29 games in his high school season. He hit .476 with 12 homers and 49 RBI in those 29 games. His grandfather was a teammate of Ted Williams.

The outfielder is committed to go to UCLA, but I have a feeling he won’t be attending.

Moniak joins a club with a lot of outfield talent coming up from the minors. Per MLBpipeline.com, the Phillies have eight of their top 30 prospects in the outfield including Nick Williams who they got from the Texas Rangers in the Cole Hamels deal and last year’s first round pick Cornelius Randolph.

The Phillies have the most money in their draft pool of anyone and the signibility of Moniak I’m sure helped with their selection. The Phillies pick again at 42 and could use that savings to grab another pick.

Moniak projects to be a centerfielder in the majors and that had a lot to do with the pick as well. Anytime you can get a cornerstone building block up the middle for your franchise it helps.
