The recent rumors claiming the Chicago Cubs had a deal agreed upon for New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman were found to be false. This situation shows why you should ignore the majority of trade rumors around this time of year.

It’s that time of the year again right? There will be hundreds of trade rumors that never materialize, however that will not stop the chatter from spreading through social media like wildfire. We’re not far removed from the Wilmer Flores fiasco. Thankfully the rumors linking Chapman to the Cubs didn’t reach that level.

Yes, that was the tweet that began the situation. Which should have raised eyebrows to begin with, while the Yankees are struggling it seems a bit earlier for them to begin selling off attractive targets. The Cubs do have a need for a left hand reliever with the struggles of Clayton Richard – however Chapman isn’t the best of fits in a tight knit Cubs clubhouse.

The rumors reached a ridiculous level with a 2nd tweet.

Javier Baez, Adam Warren, and a prospect for a 3 month rental of Chapman? Really?
