Baseball is the quintessential American sport, and July 4th is the quintessential American holiday. Naturally, many of MLB’s best moments occurred on Independence Day. Here are five of the most unique.

America is built around this day, July 4; it is the foundation of the United States. Since the first organized baseball game was played on a dirt field in Hoboken, New Jersey, baseball has been a massive hobby and pastime for Americans all over the country.

Baseball and July 4th go hand-in-hand. The sport has been played professionally on July 4th since 1881, and the combination is truly an American pastime. There have been many great games and fantastic moments on the Fourth of July, with the most notable dating as far back as humans have recorded baseball.

There have some somber moments and amazing performances; two weeks into his ALS diagnosis, Lou Gehrig declared himself “the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” Pitchers have also stolen the show in many July 4 games in every fashion from their pitching to their hitting. There have been all sorts of crazy and unique moments that feel better when they happen on July 4th.

Overall, there have been five moments on the Fourth of July that stand out as moments which make you feel better both from an emotional standpoint and a baseball standpoint that they happened on this day.
