The Baltimore Orioles added some needed depth to their rotation by acquiring Wade Miley from the Seattle Mariners.

The Baltimore Orioles have powered their way to the top of the AL East. Their lineup is stacked with guys like Adam Jones, Mark Trumbo and Chris Davis. Their pitching, however, leaves something to be desired. Other than Chris Tillman, filling in their rotation has been a struggle for them.

With their most recent trade, they hope they at least added a little bit of depth for their rotation as they acquired Wade Miley from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for Ariel Miranda.

The 29-year-old Miley is 7-9 this year with a 4.98 ERA. In 112.1 innings, he’s given up 117 hits. He is 1-4 this month, but with an ERA of 3.45. He was excellent in his start yesterday vs the Cubs, allowing just one hit over seven innings and striking out nine.

Miranda is a 27-year-old lefty out of Cuba. He has been up with the Orioles for a cup of coffee this season. At AAA this year, Miranda is 4-7 with an ERA of 3.93. Miranda could come up and replace Miley in the M’s rotation, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney:

The Mariners get to save some money in this deal as well. Miley will make close to $9 million next year and has a $12 million team option ($500,000 buyout) for 2018.

It didn’t cost the O’s a lot to get Miley. This is not like the Eduardo Rodriguez-for-Andrew Miller trade a couple of years ago. Miley gives them some depth and a different look. Expect the Orioles to try and get another deal done by the deadline tomorrow.
