MLB: Five Potential Trade Candidates for August
By Jason Evans
Just because the MLB trade deadline is over doesn’t mean there can’t be more action! The waiver deadline is August 31
Yesterday was fun huh? There were a whopping 18 deals made before the MLB trade deadline as teams like the Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants made some big deals. We saw the New York Yankees add on to their fire sale.
The fun isn’t over there. Trades can still happen. They are a little harder to consummate though.
A player has to be on your 40 man roster by August 31 to be eligible for the postseason. After July 31 (or August 1 this year), if you want to trade a player you have to place them on waivers first.
For example, let’s say the Dodgers want to trade Yasiel Puig (more on that later). They have to put him on trade waivers first. A team can put a claim in on him. If he’s claimed, the Dodgers can say take him for nothing, pull him back, or try an work out a trade. If a trade can’t be worked out, they can pull him back.
If Puig clears waivers, they can trade him wherever. Got it? Cool.
Now that I’ve explained the rules, let’s take a look at some players who may be on the move this August, as playoff contenders look to add a supporting piece or two to the championship puzzle.
