Brian McCann has cleared waivers and is eligible to be traded in the month of August.  While the New York Yankees’ veteran backstop hasn’t lived up to the offensive numbers he put up earlier in his career he carries significant value in his clubhouse presence alone. Add in the fact that he is an above average offensive catcher and plenty of teams will be calling on the Yankees regarding McCann.

What could make a potential deal challenging is the fact that the Yankees are insistent that they must receive a legitimate prospect without having to cover any of McCann’s large salary. While this makes a deal much tougher the asking price and what a team will settle on are usually a bit further apart than most general managers would admit.

The biggest problem for the Yankees will be finding a team that is in need of a catcher and able to take his salary. While this may not sound all that difficult the market for a veteran catcher who is overpaid through no fault of his own, may be smaller than suspected. Also keep in mind that Brian McCann will have a say in where he will end up if a trade was to happen with a full no-trade clause in his contract.
