Pablo Sandoval has been a disaster since signing with the Boston Red Sox as a free agent. Heading into the 2017 season, they appear willing to put their faith on the former All Star.

When the Boston Red Sox signed Pablo Sandoval to his five year, $95 Million contract prior to the 2015 campaign, he was expected to solidify the third base position for them. Instead, Sandoval showed up completely out of shape, and posted his worst season in the Majors. Then, heading into 2016, Sandoval lost his starting job, and spent most of the year on the disabled list with a shoulder issues.

Now, not even a year later, everything has changed. Travis Shaw, the incumbent third baseman, has been traded to the Brewers. Yoan Moncada, the top prospect in baseball, who had also been playing third, was sent as part of the package to acquire Chris Sale. At this point, the only real challenge that Sandoval would have for the spot is Brock Holt, who may best be served in his super utility role.

With these moves, the Red Sox are showing some faith in the beleaguered third baseman. The position is all but his now, as his work to lose weight and get back to being the player he once was has been noted. Those reports that Sandoval had a chance to start next year are proving to be correct.

More from Call to the Pen

However, whether or not he will be able to perform at the level the Boston Red Sox anticipate is the biggest question heading into the 2017 campaign. It is clear that they are all in on a World Series title next year, and Sandoval will need to be a key part of that.

But can he be? In his time with the Red Sox, Sandoval has posted a .242/.290/.361 batting line, hitting ten home runs and 25 doubles. His defense, which had been solid with the Giants, has been abysmal. In his 125 games at third in Boston, Sandoval has cost the Red Sox 11 runs. He was considered a part of the clubhouse issues in 2015, and it may be fair to wonder if he can perform in a pressure environment like Boston.

This upcoming season may be his last chance to show that he can be a valued part of the Red Sox roster. He does not have any real competition for the third base at this point, unless Rafael Devers forces the Red Sox hand. He can come in to Spring Training, secure in that knowledge that third base is truly his position to lose.

The Boston Red Sox are putting their faith in Pablo Sandoval. This may well be his last chance to reward that confidence.
