Juan Lagares had been spending the offseason playing for Aguilas Cibaenes in the Dominican Winter League, staying in shape for the 2017 season. His time in the Dominican may have come to an early end, as the New York Mets outfielder injured his shoulder.

It is not uncommon for players to spend their time in various Winter Leagues during the offseason, taking that time to remain in playing shape and to keep themselves sharp heading in to Spring Training. New York Mets outfielder Juan Lagares is just one of the many players to take that opportunity, as he had been playing for Aguilas Cibaenes in the Dominican Winter League this offseason.

However, his time with Aguilas may be over, at least for this season. Lagares injured his shoulder attempting to make a diving catch on Saturday, and underwent an x-ray the following day. According to Adam Rubin, those x-rays were negative, but he is returning to New York. His availability for Opening Day may be in question, depending on the results of his examination.

If Lagares is injured for an extended length of time, that could be a big blow for the New York Mets. While he was not expected to crack the starting lineup, the former Gold Glove winner would be a perfect fit as a fourth outfielder, capable of slotting in anywhere to provide the starters a rest or as a late inning defensive replacement.

Even though he may not contribute much offensively, with a career .259/.298/.366 batting line, Lagares still has quite a bit of value to the Mets. It is telling that, as they look to trade an outfielder or two, his name has not come up as someone they are looking to part with. Even in a part time role, he is expected to be a key piece of the ballclub.

However, his injury could have a ripple effect on the Mets offseason plans. Those plans to trade an outfielder, either Jay Bruce or perhaps Curtis Ganderson, could be put on the back burner as the Mets would need that depth. With their desire to move Bruce as a salary dump, this injury could have ramifications that last into the season.

Juan Lagares may not seem like the type of player that would change an offseason, but his injury may do just that for the New York Mets.
