Miami Marlins late pitcher Jose Fernandez left us all too soon. On February 24th, 2017 a new piece of him was welcomed into the world.

On Friday, February 24th 2017, Jose Fernandez’s daughter was born. Fernandez’ girlfriend, Maria Arias, gave birth to a baby girl named Penelope. As you may know, Jose was tragically taken from us on September 25th, 2016. Penelope was born one day before the five month anniversary of the tragic passing, and sources say she will be the subject involving the filing for Jose’s estate. Of course, Penelope would be a beneficiary of this estate, and it is estimated to be worth anywhere from $2-3 million dollars.

Of course money could not heal this wound, but I am gratified to know that Jose’s family will be taken care of. While we may have lost Jose, we all have a piece of him within us – the silliness, the passion, and the pure love of the game. Jose seemed to be one of those phenomenal people who the world was so lucky to have. All of us have been lucky to be able to witness Jose, and now are extremely lucky to have another piece of him on this earth. Martin Prado said it best:

More from Call to the Pen

"“It’s going to bring a lot of peace and happiness to both families and friends, and even us. Just happy to see a piece of Jose that is going to grow. She’s going to be so blessed.”"

Of course, Fernandez was an all-star pitcher if we ever saw one. At 24 years old he was already one of baseball’s best, and quite frankly should have been a finalist for the NL Cy Young. Fernandez owned a 16-8 record with a 2.86 ERA and 6.1 WAR. Not only was Jose a fantastic person, he was a fantastic player. Fernandez was the ultimate epitome of the definition of a role model, as he likely was for many young baseball players around the globe.

The game of baseball may never recover from the passing of Fernandez, and the other recent passing’s we have seen. Oscar Taveras, Jose, and Yordano Ventura have all been taken from us too soon recently. The best thing we can do as fans is stay strong for the players family and friends, and be strong when they cannot.

Therefore I, along with the rest of the staff here at Call to then Pen, would like to wish Jose’s daughter, family, and friends our best in the coming time. We all wish that Penelope have a healthy life, as we all will do our best to give her an idea of the great man that her father was.
