The Double-A team of the Detroit Tigers, the Erie SeaWolves, will host #AlternativeFacts Night on August 25.

What do you do when your Double-A team has never won a league title? In 2017, you host #AlternativeFacts Night to celebrate the tile you didn’t win last season. In a time when news is now “fake news” and assertions about crowd size, massive voter fraud, and wire tapping can be made with no evidence whatsoever, why not have some fun with #AlternativeFacts Night?

The Erie SeaWolves are the Double-A Team for the Detroit Tigers. In real life, last season they finished fourth in the Western Division of the Eastern League, 15 games behind the Akron RubberDucks. But on #AlternativeFacts Night, the Erie SeaWolves will celebrate last year’s fictional league title when they play the Akron Yellow Bath Toys. The team expects a big crowd also. They estimate there will be roughly 1.2 million fans at UPMC Park, which has a seating capacity of 6,000. That’s the beauty of #AlternativeFacts Night, it’s kind of like what Billy Idol says of first class passengers in The Wedding Singer, on #AlternativeFacts Night you can say pretty much whatever you want.

The SeaWolves will host #Alternative Facts Night on August 25. The idea, of course, comes from a conversation between Chuck Todd and Counselor to the President, Kellyanne Conway on January 22. Todd pointed out that White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer lied about the size of the crowd for President Trump’s inauguration. After a back-and-forth conversation, Kellyanne Conway said that Sean Spicer gave alterative facts, and a meme was born. This is an #AlternativeFacts version of that incident with Anderson Cooper filling in for Chuck Todd:

SeaWolves president Greg Coleman said of the promotion, “Alternative Facts have become a part of popular culture in 2017. We plan to interject truthful hyperbole into all aspects of the game on this night, from our giveaway to the between-innings fun. It’s going to be huge.” He probably meant yuge, but we’ll let that one slide. On the bright side, even as the truth takes a beating, the Partnership for Erie’s Public Schools will benefit from proceeds of the in-game promotions on #AlternativeFacts Night.

This promotion comes on the final weekend of the regular season for the SeaWolves. On Thursday, August 24, there will be an appearance by former major league player Carlos Baerga, along with a Fireworks show after the game. Friday is #AlternativeFacts Night, with the Replica Championship Ring Giveaway to honor the 2016 title they didn’t win. Saturday is Fan Appreciation Night and another Fireworks Show. And the Sunday game is the final game of the regular season, with a catch on the field for all fans.
