In yesterday’s victory over the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers starter Nick Tepesch left the game in the second inning after being hit in the right wrist with a line drive off of Jesus Montero‘s powerful bat. Tepesch had to leave his post after striking out three batters and allowing two hits in 1.2 innings, but the Rangers didn’t miss a beat. In fact, the Rangers bullpen came in and shut out the Mariners in the 5-0 victory, with Derek Lowe notching the win after four perfect frames. Jason Frasor finished the game off by striking out two batters and walking just one in the final inning.

Jim Cowsert-USA TODAY Sports

Tepesch suffered the injury in just his third MLB start, and he currently has a 3.46 ERA this year in a solid start to the season. He has been diagnosed with a right wrist contusion, according to a tweet from Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times. A contusion is just a fancy word for a severe bruise, so Tepesch has a good chance of making his next scheduled start. He’s going to be listed day-to-day by the Rangers, and the young right-hander should be able to continue his quality start to the season.

If we take into account Tepesch’s outing yesterday, he now has a 3.07 ERA and actually had 18 strikes out of 21 total pitches yesterday.

Some terrible news coming out of Tampa. Top Tampa Bay Rays shortstop prospect Hak-Ju Lee tore ligaments in his left knee during yesterday’s game for Triple-A Durham, and Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the chances of Lee returning this season are “unlikely”. It’s devastating news for Lee, who is a 22-year-old shortstop and one of the top prospects in one of the top farm systems. In fact, Lee was hitting a scorching .419 before being injured, and he has the kind of defense that everyone loves at the shortstop position.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Smith replied to one of his followers wondering if it was an ACL tear that Lee suffered, and Smith stated that it is “possible” and that team doctors in St. Petersburg will examine Lee’s left knee and see exactly what kind of an injury he suffered. Hopefully the worst doesn’t happen and Lee’s injury isn’t an ACL tear.

The Rays acquired the shortstop as one of the big pieces when they dealt Matt Garza to the Chicago Cubs, and he has showed the organization plenty of promise. It’s always awful to see a young player go down with a severe injury, and he is the shortstop of the future in Tampa Bay. Let’s wish him well in the rehab process.

Texas Rangers 27-year-old outfielder Julio Borbon is on the trading block after being designated for assignment about five days ago, and there isn’t an opportunity for him to make an impact in Arlington. His agent, the might Scott Boras, stated that Borbon would have three to four teams interested in trading for him, and so far we have heard of two teams. The Minnesota Twins are reportedly showing some mild interest in Borbon, and now ESPN’s MLB Insider Buster Olney reports that the Baltimore Orioles “have interest” in Borbon. However, Olney adds that the Orioles “have found the asking price too high”.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Borbon will most likely go without being traded and will instead be scooped up after he clears waivers. That’s unless the Rangers lower their asking price for a team like the Orioles or Twins, or if a team really likes Borbon or really wants to add another outfielder into the mix. Most teams interested would much rather wait until ten days after the DFA period, because nobody wants to make a trade unless they have to. With a lukewarm market, the Rangers might not be able to find a trade partner for Borbon unless somebody, again, really wants him. I doubt that happens, and the Rangers are trying to get what they can within this window. If they want something, they’re going to have to cut down and settle for a low-level prospect.

The best asset that the left-handed hitter provides is his speed, but his swiftness on the bases is outweighed by his inability to get on base at a high rate. He offers no pop, but he can be a quality depth outfielder for a team. Depth outfielders usually don’t generate much trade interest, so we’ll see what the Rangers can get out of him.

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira is looking to return on the first day of May from the partially torn tendon in his right wrist, but his return might be pushed back a little bit. Teixeira was hoping to be able to swing the bat yesterday and move on to the next step in the rehab process, but the Yankees MLB.com blog reports that Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser (yes, that’s rosewater auf Deutsch) and the Yankees did not clear Tex to swing the bat.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Even though this was only a minor setback, Teixeira’s goal to return at the beginning of May will likely not be fulfilled. He still has to swing the bat, work the glove, run the bases, and play a few rehab games. The Yankees are not going to rush Teixeira either, no matter how much they want a power bat back in the line-up.

For now, the Yanks will continue to roll with a mix of Kevin Youkilis and (gulp) Lyle Overbay in Tex’s absence, and his goal to return on the first of May has always been viewed as optimistic even before this minor delay. The doctors just want Teixeira to build up strength in his wrist for the next few days, and then he will likely be cleared to swing the bat.

“He wants me to get a little stronger before I swing, so the next couple days I’m just going to really ramp up the strengthening. Because we’re kind of going week to week with it, he wants to make sure it’s really strong enough before I swing,” Teixeira said.

The A’s have now won nine straight games, but the win may have come at a price. Two key outfielders in Coco Crisp and Yoenis Cespedes suffered injuries, but thankfully the early news on Cespedes sounds good.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Let’s start with the “worse” news coming out of Oakland. Crisp left the game against the Tigers with a strained left groin, and it sounds like Crisp is headed for the disabled list. Keep an eye out for any roster moves from the Athletics, but the A’s should be able to deal with a DL trip from just one outfielder. Although Crisp has been off to a great start this year with a 1.095 OPS, the Athletics have plenty of depth in the outfield and can use Seth Smith more in the interim. Michael Taylor is a big candidate for a call-up if Crisp is indeed placed on the DL with that groin injury.

Cespedes’s outlook seemed a little bit iffy at the beginning, but now it appears clear that Cespedes will be able to avoid a DL trip. He took a rough slide into second, but he was able to stay in the game for a few innings until his name was called at the dish once again in the 11th. The Athletics gave Cespedes the night off, and they took him in for an X-ray.

CSN Bay Area’s Casey Pratt reported that Cespedes’s X-rays on his left hand came in negative, so consider the 27-year-old outfielder day-to-day. I expect him to miss today’s game, and that would mean a starting outfield trio of Smith, Chris Young, and Josh Reddick. Cespedes has had a rough start to the season batting at the Mendoza line and posting an OBP under .300. However, he has flashed plenty of power with three home runs already through 11 games.

Los Angeles Dodgers 37-year-old left-hander Ted Lilly made his first rehab start on Friday, and it was a rocky one overall. Lilly, who is suffering from a left shoulder injury, allowed five runs in six innings, with the three home runs he allowed being the killers. It sounds like Lilly’s outing was a disaster, but he did manage to stay in for six innings without any health setbacks and did manage to strike out four batters for High-A Rancho Cucamonga.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

According to the Dodgers MLB.com blog, Lilly will make his next rehab start tomorrow, but he will get a move on up to Triple-A Albuquerque. Lilly is currently on the disabled list retroactive to the 29th of March, so he is eligible to return on the 13th of this month. He also had a flu in Spring Training and has needed to build up strength coming off of shoulder labrum surgery. It’s been a rough past couple of months for Lilly, and it might not get any easier.

Why? Even after Lilly comes off of the disabled list, he won’t be getting any work in the Dodgers rotation. Their starting five is filled to the brim, so there’s no room for Lilly. If there was any possibility of Lilly getting in some relief work, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly squashed all hopes of Lilly working out of the bullpen by saying Lilly wouldn’t be fit to pitch in relief.

The Dodgers are still trying to shop Lilly since there is no space for him, so hopefully the veteran finds greener pastures soon. It’s taken quite some time, and the Dodgers still haven’t been able to find the right trade partner. However, they recently dished Aaron Harang (similar situation as Lilly’s, minus the shoulder issue and the dreaded flu) to the Colorado Rockies, and it is always easier to find trade partners during the season. Here’s to hoping the best to Lilly in his recovery, rehab start tomorrow, and future opportunities with a new ballclub (since it will likely come to that). Lilly, by the way, is expected to have a couple of more rehab starts after this next one.

The St. Louis Cardinals have cleared 2011 World Series hero David Freese for duty today, and it’s come at a great time for the Cardinals ahead of their rivalry tilt with the Cincinnati Reds. The NL Central heavyweights will start their series today, and it will be the Cardinals home opener. The plan all along was to have Freese ready by the time the Cards home opener rolled around, and Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch tweeted the good news out yesterday.

Brad Barr-USA TODAY Sports

Goold reports that the Cardinals will activate Freese from the disabled list prior to the start of the game, and he began his rehab stint on Friday to get back from the back injury. In his first rehab game for Triple-A Memphis, Freese played in seven innings total and notched an excellent two-run double for his lone hit.

After that rehab game, the 29-year-old third baseman said he felt good and was suffering no setbacks. Thanks to the fact that everything has gone flawlessly for Freese on the rehab front, the Cardinals plan to have him ready for today’s big game against the Reds has been fulfilled. We’ll see how he does in his first game back, and the Cards will likely shift Matt Carpenter over to second base now that Freese is in the fold again.

Aaron Harang is about to find himself out of the NL West, because the Colorado Rockies are looking to wheel-and-deal the veteran right-hander after acquiring him from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday for veteran catcher Ramon Hernandez. The Rockies also received cash considerations out of the deal from the Dodgers, and Harang was on the Dodgers trading block for pretty much the entirety of the offseason.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Shortly after acquiring Harang, the Rockies designated the 34-year-old starter-turned-reliever for assignment, and they viewed him as future trade bait from the very start. The Rockies have been talking to teams interested in acquiring the pitcher set to make $7 million in 2013 (money the Rockies will most likely have to partially eat up), and we now know who those three teams are.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported yesterday that the Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins, and Houston Astros are interested in trading for Aaron Harang from the Rockies to add to the back of their starting rotation (at least, that’s how I think those teams will use him). Harang’s trade saga is one of the most perplexing in the MLB, because he was basically acquired as trade bait. It leaves fans such as myself wondering, “Why didn’t those three teams just directly trade for Harang from the Dodgers?” Either way, the Dodgers came out OK overall by adding the backup catcher they wanted and getting rid of Harang’s $7 million salary.

Tampa Bay Rays designated hitter Luke Scott is expected to be out for two to three weeks to start the season with a calf strain that is more severe than the Rays initially thought/hoped. An MRI revealed yesterday that Scott sustained the injury to his right calf, and the Rays promptly placed him on the 15-day disabled list. The DL stint is retroactive to the 24th of this month, so Scott is eligible to return on the 8th of April and believes he can be back by then.

Rob Foldy-USA TODAY Sports

Although the 34-year-old is only expected to miss a few weeks, Rays beat writer Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that Scott could miss up to five weeks with the calf strain. Despite Scott’s belief, it is high unlikely for the DH to be back by then, and it will be interesting to see what the Rays do at the DH spot in the interim.

Topkin writes that powerful 1B/DH Shelley Duncan and young, solid OF Brandon Guyer are possible replacements for Luke Scott. While Duncan is the more natural fit for the Rays at DH, Guyer is already on the 40-man roster and is much easier and less risky to put into the fold. As Topkins states, the Rays might lose Duncan when they send him back to Durham after Scott’s return.

The Philadelphia Phillies made several moves this morning in the minor leagues and MLB to reflect the additions of a couple of players on the Opening Day roster. Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweeted this morning that Rule 5 pick Ender Inciarte, veteran backstop Humberto Quintero, and reliever Phillipe Aumont all made the Opening Day Roster. Aumnot made it to the bullpen ahead of Michael Stutes, who was promptly optioned to Triple-A.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Stutes finished Spring Training with an ERA near 7.50, and the right-hander’s demotion comes as no surprise. Meanwhile, the Phillies also sent a trio of players to minor league camp in veteran right-hander Zach Miner, backstop Steven Lerud (Quintero beat him), and talented infielder Pete Orr. Of those three players, Orr is the one who holds the most value to the organization and is expected to be sent to Triple-A to start the season.

The Phillies will need to keep the Rule 5 Inciarte on the 25-man roster, otherwise he will be sent back to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The backup outfielder showed up pretty well this spring, and it will be interesting to see if they do keep him on the 25-man the entire year.

Quintero, on the other hand, was a non-roster invitee to Spring Training and thus can only be placed on the 40-man roster. However, Quintero’s place on the team is pretty important with Carlos Ruiz out with a hand injury, as Quintero will the the primary backup to Ruiz with Erik Kratz starting in the interim. Quintero had a meager .257 OBP with an OPS a couple of points under .600 in 43 games last season. He was expected to make the Phillies roster after being signed by the team in late November with Ruiz’s injury in mind, and Quintero did what was expected of him.
