Injuries (and age) have been the dominant factor in most discussions surrounding the New York Yankees so far this season. Injuries and their now 1-3 start after this afternoon’s 8-3 loss at the Detroit Tigers. The team has been beaten up on the mound (a collective 6.43 ERA on the season to date) and hasn’t swung the bat well (.225/.306/.364) through the season’s first four games. It’s far too small of a sample size to draw any legitimate conclusions from, but things could be looking up with some positive news on the injury front this afternoon.

Leading off, the team had ample reason for concern after Hiroki Kuroda was forced to exit Wednesday’s game early after taking a line drive off his pitching hand. Shane Victorino lined one back up the middle in the 2nd inning. Kuroda acted instinctively and tried to make a play on the ball, only to have it ricochet off his hand and into center field. He’d remain in the game for a few more batters before ultimately coming out once his control seemed to abandon him. The initial diagnosis was just a simple bruised finger, but still there were concerns that more damage had been done.

Kuroda threw a bullpen session earlier today and appears to have been cleared to make his next scheduled start, Monday against the Cleveland Indians, according to Andy McCullough of The Newark Star Ledger.

Meanwhile, Eduardo Nunez appears to be ok after a scary moment during today’s game. During the 4th inning he took a pitch off his right arm, collapsed on the ground, and was noticeably in a great deal of pain. He’d leave the game, replaced by Jayson Nix, but X-rays came back negative. Nunez is considered day-to-day after fearing he’d broken his arm on the play, according to Chris Vannini of MLB.com. Nunez is already in the lineup to cover for another injured Yankee, Derek Jeter, so there is little wiggle room for him to go down with a significant concern.

Finally, there’s a positive report on right-hander Phil Hughes as he’ll be activated from the DL in time to start tomorrow’s game, reports MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. He’s been sidelined since late February with a bulging disk in his lower back. Hughes had been scheduled to make a second rehab start Saturday, with the team’s Triple-A affiliate, but instead will rejoin the rotation ahead of schedule thanks to the current need on the active roster. With Kuroda forced out of Wednesday’s game early and then with Ivan Nova unable to get through five innings of work today, the team’s bullpen is already being worked hard. With Hughes returning, the team can shift Saturday’s probably starter, David Phelps, back into a long reliever role.

New York will need to avoid any setbacks with their remaining injured players and the rest of the roster will have to find a way to stay healthy if this team is going to compete this season. They’ve been hit hard already, considering the payroll they have on the DL, but it’s still early enough in the season for things to turn around.

New York Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda made his first start of the season this evening, against the Boston Red Sox, but it would prove to be a short outing. The right-hander was forced to leave the game early in the second inning after taking a line drive off his hand. It’s expected that he’ll undergo further evaluation and testing, including X-rays, as soon as time permits.

Shane Victorino led off the inning with a sharp liner back up the middle. Kuroda reached up, instinctively, to make a play on the ball but it ricocheted off his hand and into center field. Manager Joe Girardi and Head Trainer Steve Donohue came out to the mound to check on Kuroda, but after a few warmup pitches they felt he was ok to continue.

Things then unraveled as Kuroda was unable to maintain his command of his pitches.

First Jackie Bradley Jr. was hit by a pitch. Jose Iglesias grounded into a fielder’s choice, as the Yankees managed to get Victorino out at third. Jacoby Ellsbury then walked, loading the bases. Daniel Nava was subsequently hit by a pitch, forcing Bradley in with a run. Kuroda was ultimately removed from the game at this point, replaced by Cody Eppley.

Kuroda, penciled in as the Yankees’ #2 starter, will hopefully not miss any significant time. The team is calling his injury just a simple bruised finger, but they clearly removed him from the game for precautionary reasons. For an organization already suffering from an abundance of injuries, there has to be hope that Kuroda won’t need to join the collection of players already on the DL.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have a desire to add a top-flight starting pitcher and the deepest of pockets to use in doing so. It would stand to reason that if they were interested in the biggest name on the market, that of right hander Zack Greinke, the Dodgers would have to be considered the favorites.

According to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, they are.

According to an industry insider, the Dodgers are the favorites to wind up with top free agent starter Zack Greinke, with the Angels and Rangers on the outside looking in.

Greinke is the biggest fish in the starting pitcher pond. Image: Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

Earlier this month, we had heard that the Dodgers weren’t serious players for Greinke, and that their top targets were Hiroki Kuroda and Anibal Sanchez. If Silverman’s source is to be believed, the Dodgers have shifted their philosophy. Perhaps, and this is just me speculating here, the thinking was that if Sanchez was going to ask for $15 million per year at six or seven years, they may be smarter in offering a shorter contract to Greinke, but at a significantly higher average annual value.

The Dodgers are known to want to re-unite with Kuroda, whose story seems to change weekly. Originally we heard he only wanted to pitch in New York or he was going back to Japan, which is what he had said about LA in 2011 before signing with the Yankees. Then we heard he was open to the Dodgers or Yankees, now the word is he prefers to pitch in Southern California, which brings the Angels into play. The one constant in this discussion is that Boston, who is known to be pursuing the right hander, doesn’t seem to be on Kuroda’s radar at all.

If things continue the way they have for Kuroda, that almost has to make the Red Sox the favorites to sign him, right?

But seriously, if the Dodgers do wind up with the top starting pitcher on the market, the Angels are in serious trouble. They jettisoned both Dan Haren and Ervin Santana in order to clear enough payroll space to keep Greinke. Sure, that money could be used to sign someone like Kuroda or Sanchez instead, but either pitcher would have to feel like a let down, no matter their talent level. Jerry Dipoto entered the off-season with one goal and that was to re-sign Greinke. To lose him would bade enough, to lose him to the Dodgers, who are re-staking their claim to the precious LA market they ceded to the Angels during the McCourt era, would be extra hard to swallow.

When the Greinke deal gets done, no matter what team it’s with, the market for the rest of the starters (Ryan Dempster, Brandon McCarthy, etc.) will be better defined. So too will the trade markets for guys like James Shields, Jeremy Hellickson, Matt Garza, and however many of the Dodgers’ spare parts get tossed onto the market.

The Dodgers are the real wild card here. In the eyes of many pundits, Greinke was going back to Anaheim, Sanchez to Detroit, and Kuroda possibly to the Dodgers. That would have left the third-tier guys to be divvied up between the Yankees, Rangers, and Red Sox; all of which need at least one starter.

In a game of musical chairs, there are fewer front-end starters available than teams that desire them. When the seats begin to be filled, clubs had better act quickly and aggressively or be left without a chair.

After spending a year pitching in the Bronx, Hiroki Kuroda has reportedly been making it known to friends that his preference would be to return to southern California, where his two daughters reside. We’ve heard this geographical preference from Kuroda before, and obviously he’ll probably be willing to make an exception if the Yankees blow him away with an especially lucrative offer, but it sounds as though he’d be more comfortable returning to the Dodgers, a team he spent four years with, or another team in that region.

Mandatory Credit: Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Kuroda, who will be 38 before the 2013 season starts, made a difficult transition from the NL West in one of baseball’s most pitcher-friendly parks to the loaded AL East last and handled it with aplomb. Kuroda was worth 3.9 WAR per FanGraphs in 2012, the second highest total of the Yankee rotation behind only staff ace CC Sabathia.

While obviously not a candidate for a long-term deal due to his age, teams looking for a short-term solution in their rotation could do a lot worse than inking Kuroda to a one or two-year deal this offseason. He’s failed to make at least 31 starts only once in five years since being imported from Japan, he owns a solid 3.42 career ERA, and his control is always excellent. Until the inevitable age-related decline sets in, Koroda figures to remain a consistent starter, and someone who could hold his own as a number-three even in a very strong rotation.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the team all the other teams fear this Winter. No organization has the same financial freedom as the Dodgers do, not even the mighty Yankees. Other teams can spend, but when it comes right down to it, 29 teams have a budget and then there are the Dodgers.

So, when the Dodgers are targeting a player, you can bet they become the instant favorites to sign that player. Money is no object.

Kuroda never wanted to leave LA, now the Dodgers hope he’ll come back. Image: Debby Wong-US PRESSWIRE

This off-season, the Dodgers are on the lookout for upgrades to their starting rotation, which gets a little thin behind Clayton Kershaw. Their top targets, according to Jon Heyman, are a pair of right handers in Anibal Sanchez and Hiroki Kuroda. Surprisingly, that list did not include Zack Greinke — an omission that surely draws a sigh of relief from all those teams bidding for Greinke’s services.

Sanchez will be a hot commodity and has already been linked to the deep pockets of the Tigers and Red Sox. He does come with a steep asking price of six years and $90 million. I don’t think he’ll have a problem getting the $15 million per year he’s looking for, but most clubs would balk at the idea of giving any pitcher a deal of that length.

The same problem doesn’t come with Kuroda, who is said to be fine with a one-year deal. Like Sanchez, Kuroda is highly sought-after and possibly more so. Kuroda has had great success both in the National League with the Dodgers from 2008-11 and then in the AL East with the Yankees last year. A deal upwards of $15 million is probably in order, but on a short-term contract that number looks more palatable than Sanchez at five or six years.

Kuroda could still opt to return to Japan, as he is said to want to finish his career in his homeland. At age 38, the end is coming sooner rather than later. Given his recent history, however, you have to think he’s got at least a couple good years left in his right arm.

The Dodgers are hopeful that at least one of those years come back in Dodger Blue.

The Boston Red Sox entered the off-season with more holes than mot clubs and significantly more money available to fill them. While they haven’t made major waves thus far, apart from re-upping with DH David Ortiz, Boston is lurking in pursuit of several of the market’s bigger names.

According to the Boston Herald’s Michael Silverman, GM Ben Cherington is interested in signing free agent right hander Anibal Sanchez, most recently of the Tigers.

Cherington was overseeing international scouting for the Red Sox in 2001 when the club signed Sanchez as an international free agent from Venezuela. And seven years ago, Cherington was co-GM at the GM meetings at this same locale when the Red Sox set in motion a trade that sent the then-minor-league Sanchez, along with shortstop Hanley Ramirez, to the Marlins for Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell.

Of course, Boston is not the only club in pursuit of Sanchez, whom Silverman calls the “consensus” second-best starter on the market. Detroit has made re-signing Sanchez a priority this off-season and any other club with any kind of financial resources would surely be in the mix as well.

Sanchez is high on the wish list of a few clubs. Image: Rick Osentoski-US PRESSWIRE

Boston’s need at in the rotation won’t be met by signing one pitcher, no matter what his name. In addition, Cherington is said to be exploring the trade market, most notably with an eye on the Cleveland Indians, where GM Chris Antonetti is said to be fielding calls on several of his club’s top players.

The Red Sox have interest in outfielder Shin-Soo Choo and righty Justin Masterson, a former Red Sox reliever, now starter in Cleveland. Masterson was a part of the package sent to the Indians in the Victor Martinez deal.

It’s not clear how advanced the talks are, but the fit is obvious: The Red Sox have the ability to take on payroll after unloading roughly $250 million in contracts three months ago, and the Indians are willing to listen to offers for virtually every player on their roster.

Boston’s farm system has strengthened over the past 12 months, partially because of prospects obtained from the Dodgers in the August blockbuster. Thus, the Red Sox can afford to move the necessary minor leaguers to bring back Masterson, Choo, or both.

Look, if a starting pitcher is mildly effective and breathing he’s probably an upgrade over what Boston got from their starters a year ago and both Masterson and Sanchez should be more than mildly effective going forward. The more intriguing piece to me in Choo, who is one of the more underrated players in baseball. As Morosi notes, however, Choo is a Scott Boras client and will not be looking to sign an extension prior to hitting the open market after the 2013 season. If not for his agent, he’s a guy that I’m sure Cleveland would prefer to keep around.

Adding Choo would be boon to the offense, but right field isn’t the only opening. Boston is also shopping for a new first baseman and free agent Mike Napoli is on their radar to go along with Adam LaRoche. Napoli has primarily been a catcher in his career, but has seen a decent amount of time at first base and very few clubs are viewing him as a catcher this Winter.

Bolstering the case for Napoli is that the Rangers did not extend a qualifying offer to the slugger and therefore he won’t require draft pick compensation, unlike LaRoche, who was offered by the Nationals.

UPDATE: In addition to the right handers listed above, Jon Morosi tweets that Boston has reached out to Hiroki Kuroda as well. Kuroda is open to a one-year deal, but has previously told friends he would either remain with the Yankees or return to Japan. Of course, he had said the same thing last off-season about re-signing with the Dodgers and eventually agreed to play in New York. Given his history, you can’t blame the Red Sox for checking in.

When his contract was up, the Dodgers, who were in the midst of filing bankruptcy at the time, could afford to meet his asking price.

Kuroda threatened to leave the major leagues once before and now he’s at it agian. Image: Noah K. Murray/THE STAR-LEDGER via US PRESSWIRE

Though he had interest across baseball, most notably from the Tigers, Yankees, and Red Sox, Kuroda maintained that he would only pitch for the Dodgers or he’d head back to Japan. Eventually Kuroda relented and signed a one-year deal with the Yankees. Now, he’s at it again. This nugget unearthed by MLB Daily Dish, via Newsday:

Kuroda has told friends he’ll pitch for either the Yankees or the Hiroshima Carp next season but hasn’t decided yet. Also, he’s interested only in another one-year deal.

Kuroda was outstanding in 2012, just as he had been in the National League. The Yankees have very few certainties beyond staff ace CC Sabathia, so this marriage continues to make a good deal of sense. Kudoda will no doubt be looking for a raise from the $10 million he landed last Winter and he deserves one.

While the Yankees are certainly interested in keeping their right hander and Kuroda is interested in staying pt, it doesn’t make much sense to limit his own market this way. Even if he has zero intention of pitching anywhere beyond New York or Hiroshima, there is nothing like a good old fashioned bidding war to add a few million bucks to your contract. This type of attitude is what limited Kuroda to $10 million last year and it’s what may keep him from getting the $15-17 million he probably deserves this time around.

Regardless, it’s doubtful Kuroda will be headed back to his homeland to pitch in 2013, look for him to stay in New York on another one-year deal, and for him to leave millions on the table by doing so.

Yankees 5, Angels 0

The main reason why he signed with the New York Yankees was because of the money, but there was no lack of effort in the eight innings of scoreless ball that Hiroki Kuroda pitched to help the Yanks defeat the Los Angeles Angels 5-0. Alex Rodriguez smacked a deep homer, and Curtis Granderson added one as well. Nick Swisher got things going in the first with a base-clearing double to put New York up 3-0, and the Bombers never looked back.

For the Angels, Ervin Santana tossed six innings while giving up five runs and was thoroughly out-dueled by Kuroda. Joe Girardi quizzically took out the former Dodgers starter in the ninth to allow strikeout artist David Robertson to pitch the final frame, and he did not allow a hit or walk while also notching a K in his appearance on the mound.

Orioles 7, Blue Jays 5

Nolan Reimold went 3-5 with three runs, an RBI, two doubles, and a home run in the ninth to seal the game for the O’s. New 3B Wilson Betemit gave the Orioles the lead in the eighth inning with a two-RBI single. The Orioles bullpen overcame a rough start from Tommy Hunter (six innings, six hits, four earned runs) by allowing just three baserunners in three innings. For the Jays, the three relievers that came on to pitch allowed one run each. This game was all about the bats, which was nice to see when there are hardly any games of that ilk these days, as seven home runs were hit by both teams.

Rangers 4, Twins 1

Elvis Andrus went 3-4 with a double, and his locked-up double-play partner Ian Kinsler smashed a home run in the seventh off of Anthony Swarzak, who allowed nine hits and four runs in seven innings (just 97 pitches).

Meanwhile, Matt Harrison notched his second win of the season by allowing just one run in eight innings for another great start for the man with a 0.64 ERA. Alexi Ogando threw 19 pitches with a K and a hit allowed to notch his first save of the season.

Jason Willingham made his presence felt by getting on base three times in four plate appearances, and fellow offseason acquisition Ryan Doumit was the only Twin to churn out a multi-hit game.

Athletics 4, Mariners 0

Although Felix Hernandez pitched seven solid innings, he was bested by the never-aging, mystifying veteran Bartolo Colon. The former Cy Young winner also pitched seven innings, but he allowed just three hits and a walk without giving up a run. Hernandez gave up seven hits and three walks in his seven innings, but he had one more strikeout (six to five) and gave up two runs in total. The most valuable offensive contribution of the game came from Athletics No. 9 hitter Cliff Pennington, who went 2-4 with a nice double in the third to score Daric Barton. He would later score in that inning off of a single from Coco Crisp (1-4, RBI, BB, K). Young leadoff hitter Jemile Weeks had the lone home run of the game; a 387 foot shot in the ninth off of Doug Fister trade acquisition Charlie Furbush.

Red Sox 12, Rays 2

Despite the 12 runs, the only home run in the game was a Ben Zobrist shot to the short right field area (381 feet) off of Mark Melancon in the ninth inning. Josh Beckett was back in form, as he allowed just five hits and a run in eight innings of action. He did, however, strike out just one batter and had 14 fly-outs to 9 grounders.

Joel Peralta allowed four earned runs without recording an out, while offseason trade acquisition Josh Lueke allowed six hits and four runs in just one inning. Wade Davis was the only Rays pitcher who pitched well, as he allowed just two hits and no runs with three strikeouts in three innings.

Although it was a huge win for the Red Sox, the most notable thing that transpired was the devastating shoulder injury to Jacoby Ellsbury. He is out indefinitely, and the should-have-been 2011 AL MVP’s absence will hurt this ballclub.

Indians 8, Royals 3

Jason Kipnis tripled, Asdrubal Cabrera homered, and Derek Lowe allowed 11 hits but just three runs in 6.2 innings in the Indians (2-4) first road game of the season. Luke Hochevar had a horrible outing for Kansas City, as he allowed nine hits and seven runs in just four innings- including a seven-inning first for Cleveland.

CF Michael Brantley (doubled), Cabrera, and right fielder Shin-Soo Choo all had two hits at the top of the order for the Indians, but the Royals actually did have four hitters have multi-hit games. One of them was No. 9 hitter and locked-up shortstop Alcides Escobar, with the lovable Jeff Francoeur being the other. Even Yuniesky Betancourt got into the act at second, and the highly-regarded Alex Gordon also had two hits.

That is to be expected when vintage, past-his-prime Derek Lowe is on the mound and giving up 10+ hits. Alex Gordon, who saw a team-high 17 pitches in the game, was the only two-hit Royal to drive in a run.

Nationals 2, Reds 1

Xavier Nady tied the game in the eighth with an incredibly clutch homer for the Nats, and Jayson Werth had the game-winning single in the 13th to score star second baseman Danny Espinosa.

Cincinnati Reds starter Bronson Arroyo actually made this a pitching duel by going 7.1 scoreless innings and allowing just three hits. He actually bested Jordan Zimmerman, as the Nationals starter went seven innings, allowed three hits, but he also gave up a run. Interestingly enough, that run was a sac fly by Arroyo to score 2B Willie Harris (1-4, 2B, R). Ryan Ludwick was the only other Reds player with an extra-base hit, but his double was his only hit in five at-bats. The Nationals Ryan, Ryan Zimmerman, also went 1-5 with a double but added a walk to that total.

Rockies 7, Diamondbacks 6

Miguel Montero (2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, HR) and the immortal Todd Helton (3-5, 3 RBI, 2B) were locked in a great hitting duel between two NL West teams. The Diamondbacks improved to 5-2 after the narrow victory, despite an awful start from Daniel Hudson (3.2 innings, ten hits, six runs, three walks). Opposing starter Juan Nicasio was no better in his 2.2 innings of five-hit, five-walk, six-run ball. Both pitchers struck out three batters, but that’s hardly any consolation.

Justin Upton went 2-4 with two runs and a double, while Troy Tulowitzki went 3-4 with two runs and smacked a double off of Daniel Hudson. Rafael Betancourt finished with the save, Rex Brothers got the win, and Matt Belisle tossed two hitless innings for the Rockies. The D’Backs received two solid innings from Craig Breslow- the other pitcher in the Trevor Cahill trade- that were crucial, after a solid inning-and-a-third from fellow former A’s pitcher Brad Ziegler.

Marlins 5, Astros 4

Randy Choate, Heath Bell, and Ryan Webb (now 1-0) pitched the final three innings of the game for Miami without allowing a hit and had .125 WPAs each. Astros starter Lucas Harrell struggled through four innings of work, while Ricky Nolasco put in an average, two-runs-allowed-in-fve-innings performance for the Marlins. No. 3 hitter J.D. Martinez went 2-4 with two runs, two ribbies, and a homer for the Astros, and Gabby Sanchez (1-5) finished the game for the Marlins with the game-winning double in the 11th to score Chris Coghlan (2-5) in front of over 30,000 spectators at Marlins Park.

Dodgers 9, Padres 8

Andrew Cashner was charged with the loss, even though Clayton Richard had a poor outing by giving up four earned in six innings, as the Padres lost 9-8 to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Dodger Stadium. Chase Headley tied things up in the top of the ninth for the Padres with a homer, but Andre Either was walked by Joe Thatcher with the bases loaded to score Mark Ellis and win the game.

Aaron Harang allowed four runs, but he also struck out 13- including nine straight- in 6.1 innings. Todd Coffey was a solid offseason addition for the Dodgers, but he allowed two runs without recording an out. Speaking of allowing two runs, Kenley Jansen allowed two runs- but struck out three- in the ninth inning for his first blown save. However, he is now 2-0 on the season thanks to Ethier. Matt Kemp walked three times, and Headley and Ethier had three RBIs each.

Thatcher did not record an out, and his walk was charged as an earned run for Cashner; it was a four-pitch walk. Josh Lindblom had his second hold of the season by pitching a perfect inning for the Dodgers and recording a K.

Braves 10, Brewers 8

Craig Kimbrel recorded his third save of the season, Jonny Venters got the win, and the Braves overcame a rough outing from starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens by taking advantage of a nightmare performance from opposing starter Randy Wolf (4.1 IP, 9 H, 8 ER, 3 BB, K). K-Rod was charged with the loss for the Brew Crew after allowing two runs on two hits and two walks while recording just one out, and this was thanks to a two-RBI single from Dan Uggla (3-5, 3 RBI, R, 2B) in the eighth.

Michael Bourn went 2-4 with two runs and a triple while manning center field for the Braves, and superstar catcher Brian McCann went 4-5 with four RBIs- including a double and a homer.

Mets 5, Phillies 2

The first decision for Cliff Lee this season was a loss, as the 0-1 Phillies ace allowed four runs and two homers in seven innings of what was actually solid pitching (seven strikeouts). R.A. Dickey went seven strong and is now 2-0 after allowing just one run and one walk. Dickey did give up nine hits, but the knuckler also struck out seven. Bobby Parnell was credited with a hold after a solid inning, and Frank Francisco allowed an unearned run with three Ks in his inning of baseball.

Jason Bay had a magnificent two-run shot to score Daniel Murphy and himself in the first, and that homer was recorded at a distance of 450 feet. Freddy Galvis and Scott Hairston also homered in the game, with Lucas Duda notching a sac fly to score No. 3 hitter and third baseman Justin Turner in the ninth. The unearned run in the bottom of the ninth came from an error by- surprise, surprise- Murphy on a bad throw to first that allowed Carlos Ruiz to score and the speedy Juan Pierre to make it to first.

Giants 5, Pirates 0

Valley Fever couldn’t slow down Buster Posey, as the star catcher had the highest WPA (.147) of any hitter in this game. He gave the Giants a lead in the first that they would never relinquish after a double to center to score quality offseason acquisition Melky Cabrera (2-3, two runs). Aubrey Huff hit his first home run of the season in the eighth, and that also scored Cabrera. Fellow outfield offseason acquisition Angel Pagan went 0-4 in the leadoff spot.

However, the real story of this game was how the Giants pitching got back on track. It may be just the Pirates, but Matt Cain was still at his best on this afternoon. He notched his first win of the season by allowing just one hit and 11 strikeouts in a complete game shutout. He now has a 3.00 ERA and is looking to make good on the lucrative extension he signed with the Giants. He had a Game Score of 96, and this performance is the best of the early season and will be one of the best of the year when we look back at it in September. Cain dominated the Pirates by throwing 73 strikes in 106 pitches.

Cubs 9, Cardinals 5

The Chicago Cubs got the best of their Route 66 rivals and defending World Series champs, as Ian Stewart (game-high .179 WPA) went 1-2 with two runs, two walks, and three RBIs. The Cubs acquired him in a trade with the Colorado Rockies this offseason, and he has been incredible so far. As expected, Stewart has been back to his old self (and better) with a .538 slugging percentage in the young season thus far while with Chicago. He homered in this game, and leadoff hitter David DeJesus also scored two runs and doubled in the second off of Adam Wainwright. The value signing in right faced 21 pitches and has a .438 OBP so far (career .356 OBP).

Wainwright had a surprisingly awful game, as he lasted just three innings and allowed seven hits and eight runs in total. Former Notre Dame tight end Jeff Samardzija is now 2-0, but he was also poor and allowed ten hits and five runs in five innings.
