]]> In the past, Ryan Raburn has proved to be a relatively useful big league player, especially in a part-time role. The 31-year-old is versatile, having the ability to play all positions aside from catcher and shortstop, and he’s shown some pretty good pop over the course of his career (.174 ISO).

Unfortunately, Raburn was not at useful in 2012 (he was actually worth negative 1.5 WAR according to FanGraphs), and despite coming off three straight respectable seasons as a solid bench player for the Tigers, the organization decided he wasn’t worth the $2.1 million salary assigned to him through arbitration — an understandable choice.

Consequently, the former fifth round draft selection in 2001 hit the open market and now finds himself with a minor league contract and an invitation to come to spring training with the Cleveland Indians. If any team needs help offensively, it’s Cleveland, so Raburn actually has a chance to be a serviceable player as long as they don’t have any plans of overusing him.

That said, it’s a pretty slow news day if the signing of Ryan Raburn is worth reporting at all.

]]> After word was passed down to the Detroit Tigers that Sunday evening’s game 2 had been postponed till Monday afternoon, I wonder if some of them decided to hit up a late church service.  The way things are going, they might need to start praying for offense.

Like many of us know, bad things usually travel in threes, and today the Tigers lost another corner outfielder to injury.  Magglio Ordonez, the latest member of the motor city walking wounded crew, is now done for the year with an ankle injury.  With outfielders Brennan Boesch and Delmon Young already on the shelf, this leaves Detroit in a very crummy situation.

]]> As August 31st is now upon us, it marks the end of the waiver trade period for MLB teams. If a player is not on a team’s roster by the 31st, today, then they cannot be on the team’s post-season roster. There has been plenty of activity during this past month including many players who were claimed, but deals could not be worked out and released players finding new homes. Most recently, we saw slugger Manny Ramirez head to the Chicago White Sox, who need a big spark to make up their 4.5 game deficit in the AL Central. Not all of the claims and signings made sense, so here’s a look at the numbers connected to some of the biggest names that were either involved in a trade, claimed or signed this past month. Enjoy!
