Trying to keep pace with the Phillies, the Braves faced a challenging four-game series against the Mets in New York. The split that resulted left both teams standing still against the Phillies.
In the Monday, game, Atlanta jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings against Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman. Ozzie Albies began the fun with a first-inning home run, and Travis d’Arnaud homered in the second.
Closer Shane Greene closed out the game for his third save.
On Tuesday, the Mets trailed 7-5 entering the bottom of the 11th but Ahmed Rosario’s two-RBI single tied the game and Pete Alonso won it with a base hit. The Mets rolled to an 11-2 win on Wednesday, lighting up Max Fried and three relievers for 13 hits, four of them home runs. Michael Conforto, Jeff McNeil, J.D. Davis, and Dominic Smith all homered, Davis and Smith each driving in three runs.
The Braves squared the series with a 7-5 victory Thursday. Austin Riley homered, and Mike Foltyniewicz survived into the eighth inning to run his record to 2-1.
The Washington Nationals split a two-game series with the Mariners in Seattle. You can find details of that series at this link. On Thursday the Nationals hosted the Chicago Cubs in the first game of a four-game weekend series and won 5-3. Yu Darvish gave the Cubs six strong innings and trailing just 1-0. Chicago scored three times in the top of the ninth to take the lead, Anthony Rizzo’s two-run home run being the key blow. But in the bottom of the ninth, Trey Turner delivered a walk-off grand slam against Kyle Ryan to take the 5-3 win.
The Miami Marlins beat the Los Angeles Angels twice. On Tuesday, Jordan Yamamoto and three relievers held the Angels to six hits in a 5-4 win. On Wednesday, Mike Trout’s two-run ninth-inning home run amounted to a futile gesture as Miami already led 7-1. Caleb Smith coasted to the complete-game victory, backed by a 15-hit Marlins attack. Jonathan Villar delivered four of those hits, running his average to .378.
