The New York Yankees traveled to Minute Maid Park to put their East lead on the line against the West-leading Houston Astros. The Yanks came away with just one win but held their four-game advantage when the Red Sox lost two of three in Arlington.
The Astros broke open a 5-4 game Friday with six runs off the New York bullpen on the way to an 11-4 victory. Yuli Gurriel homered, doubled, singled, and drove in six runs. New York drew even Saturday behind Gerrit Cole, who out-dueled Justin Verlander 5-4.
Cole allowed five hits and struck out six in eight innings while Verlander allowed all five Yankee runs, two coming on home runs by Giancarlo Stanton and Terrell Wade. Aroldis Chapman got the save, although not before allowing Gurriel to drive in Bregman.
The win evened Cole’s record at 4-4; Verlander is now 7-3.
Zack Greinke picked up his seventh victory Sunday when he scattered 10 Yankee hits in a 5-4 victory. Stanton was the big Yankee stick, singling a run home in the first and homering with Aaron Judge on base in the third. But George Springer and Yordan Alvarez both homered for Houston, and Gurriel drove in two runs with a pair of singles.
Tampa Bay Rays pitchers held the visiting Orioles to just one run in a sweep of the teams’ three-game series at Tropicana. Yonny Chirinos and Ryan Yarbrough held the Orioles to three singles in a 6-0 victory Friday, and Charley Morton fired a four-hit shutout Saturday, Tampa winning 5-0 to move ahead of Baltimore in the division standings.
Coming off his no-hitter vs. the Yankees, Brendan McKay also held Baltimore scoreless until the ninth inning Sunday, by which time the Rays held a 3-0 advantage. McKay allowed four hits in his eight and one-third innings.
