National League East
The Mets hoped to extract themselves from last place in the East against the equally woeful Pittsburgh Pirates, and on Friday night it looked like they might. Jacob DeGrom dominated the Pirates, holding them to five hits in a 10-2 win. Pete Alonso was one of four Mets who homered and drove in two runs.
But with DeGrom unavailable Saturday or Sunday, the Pirates rose up against New York’s jayvee pitchers. Josh Bell drove in two runs and Bryan Reynolds and Jose Osuna homered Saturday in a 6-3 Pittsburgh win for Keone Kela, working in relief of Chris Archer. On Sunday, Stephen Brault held the Mets to one run and Jarrod Dyson’s sixth-inning two-run homer was enough for a 2-1 decision. Rick Porcello fell to 1-7 on the season.
When the Marlins beat Colorado 6-4 Friday night, it marked the Rockies’ ninth consecutive defeat. But the Rockies finally turned things around Saturday, unleashing a 15-hit attack and winning 12-7. Colorado did it in bunches against Jose Urena, scoring four runs in the first, three in the fifth and a final five in the seventh.
Sunday’s series closer was tied 2-2 through 10 innings before the Rockies laid into Marlins reliever Adam Conley for five runs in the 11th. Ryan McMahon and Dom Nunez both homered as the Rockies, with just four hits in the first 10 innings, tapped Conley for six hits in that 11th inning. The final was 7-3.
The wins were Colorado’s first back-to-back victories since April 23-24.
