2020 MLB Season: Simulating AL games, June 5-7
By Bill Felber
In this 2020 MLB season simulation, the AL East tries to fend off the Jays.
New York matched the Jays Friday and Saturday, taking down the Rays 9-2 and 4-0. Masahiro Tanaka, 5-2, won the Friday game, riding a three-home run, five RBI night by Gary Sanchez. On Saturday, Gerrit Cole, 5-5, shut out the Rays on five singles, winning 4-0. Aaron Judge homered off the loser, Tyler Glasnow, 3-6.
The Rays left no doubt about Sunday’s game, touching Jonathan Loaisiga, 6-4, for five runs in the first two innings of an 11-0 outcome. Yonny Chirinos, 5-4, gave up just three hits, and Ji Man Choi homered, driving in three runs.
The Red Sox showed the kind of form their fans have been looking for since the season began, in the process dealing a blow to Milwaukee’s hopes of gaining on the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central. But Friday’s game was a narrow escape, requiring a four-run bottom of the ninth off Josh Hader to lock up a 6-5 win. Andrew Benintendi’s walk-off three-run home run settled the issue.
The Red Sox took Saturday’s game 4-1 behind Eduardo Rodriguez, 3-6. Sunday’s 6-4 decision was a win for Collin McHugh, 8-3, who pitched seven innings. Xander Bogaerts homered and drove in three runs.
