Add a top of the rotation arm

The Texas Rangers have plenty of talent in their rotation. With Dane Dunning, Glenn Otto, Spencer Howard, and Kolby Allard, there is plenty of talent ready to contribute at the major league level. Should those players develop as hoped, the Rangers could have a strong rotation for years to come.

However, that rotation needs a veteran presence. While Jordan Lyles may have been a respected veteran, he is not exactly the type of top of the rotation arm that inspires confidence. The Rangers need to find that type of pitcher in order to get the most out of their youngsters.

This does not mean that the Rangers should be shopping at the top of the market. There is no reason for the best pitchers in the game to want to go to Texas when other contending teams are competing for their services, but the Rangers could snag someone from the tier right below.

For teams to break out of the rebuilding process, they may need to overspend on a free agent or two. That will likely be the case in Texas as they look to land the type of arm that can not only be a difference maker, but can also help mentor their younger arms. If they play their cards right, the right pitcher could pay dividends for years to come.

The Texas Rangers need a veteran presence atop their rotation and a legitimate top of the rotation arm. They could get both in the right move.
