Roster Moves (5/28-5/30): A busy Memorial Day weekend

facebooktwitterreddit

It’s time to recap the slew of moves made over the weekend.  Due to the volume of the moves, today’s Roster Moves post will lean heavily (as in almost entirely) toward recap as opposed to in-depth commentary.  Today I’m trying out a little different format with regard to breaking the moves out by categories so instead of listing the moves by type, I’m listing them by division this time around.  […]

AL Central:

LHP-Alan Embree (40) was released by the Chicago White Sox.

The Detroit Tigers activated INF-Carlos Guillen from the 15-day DL.  To make room for him, 2B-Danny Worth (24) was optioned to Toledo (AAA).

Detroit also called up RHP-Max Scherzer (25) from Toledo to start on Sunday.  A start that saw him strike out 14 in 5.2 shutout innings.  To make room for Missouri Max, the Tigers designated LHP-Dontrelle Willis (28) for assignment.

RHP-Gil Meche (31) has finally and mercifully been placed on the 15-day DL with shoulder bursitis.  RHP-Victor Marte (29) was called up from Omaha to take his place on the roster.

The Cleveland Indians optioned LHP-Aaron Laffey (25) to Columbus to make room for RHP-Jensen Lewis (26) on the major league roster.

AL East:

The New York Yankees designated OF-Randy Winn (35) for assignment and then activated OF-Curtis Granderson (29) from the 15-day DL.  Welcome back Curtis!

Also in Yankees news, RHP-Anaury Sanit (30), who was pitching in AAA, has been suspended for 50 games after testing positive for a performance enhancing substance.

Remember how OF-Jacoby Ellsbury (26) came off the 15-day DL on May 21st?  On May 28th he landed back on the disabled list retroactive to May 25th, meaning he was active for just 4 days.  The ribs remain a problem much to the dismay of fantasy baseball owners who were unfortunate enough to draft Jacoby.  Continuing their bizarre usage of the roster, RHP-Scott Atchison (34) was recalled from Pawtucket after being DFA’d just three days earlier.

The Baltimore Orioles called up RHP-Jim Johnson (26) from Norfolk (AAA) and promptly placed him on the 15-day disabled list.

Also in Orioles’ news, the team optioned RHP-Cla Meredith (26) to Norfolk and then called up RHP-Chris Tillman (22).

AL West:

The Oakland Athletics optioned LHP-Cedrick Bowers (32) to Sacramento and activated ace LHP-Brett Anderson (22) from the 15-day disabled list.  Anderson proceeded to pitch 5.2 shutout innings on Saturday en route to his second win of the 2010 season.

INF-Jack Hannahan (30) was designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners.

Seattle also placed C-Josh Bard (32) on the 15-day DL with a calf strain, and called up C-Eliezer Alfonzo (31) from Tacoma.

The Texas Rangers activated LHP-Matt Harrison (24) from the 15-day disabled list and optioned RHP-Guillermo Moscoso (26) to Oklahoma City.

Texas also placed OF-Nelson Cruz (29) back on the 15-day DL with a strained hamstring and then called up OF-Craig Gentry (26) from Oklahoma City to take Nelson’s place.

NL Central:

The Houston Astros placed RHP-Bud Norris (25) on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder soreness.  To take his place on the roster, LHP-Gustavo Chacin (29) was recalled from Round Rock (AAA).  Chacin was optioned to Triple-A earlier this week, but returns to the majors after just 4 days.

Houston also optioned SS-Oswaldo Navarro (25) to Round Rock and called up LHP-Wesley Wright (25).

RHP-Charlie Morton (26) was placed on the 15-day DL with “shoulder fatigue.”  Funny how a 9.35 ERA has a way of landing you on the disabled list with a non-specific injury.  To take his spot on the roster, the Pittsburgh Pirates have called up RHP-Steven Jackson (28) from Indianapolis.

The Cincinnati Reds optioned RHP-Enerio Del Rosario (24) to Louisville and called up RHP-Sam LeCure (26).  Born in Jefferson City, Missouri, LeCure made his major league debut on Friday night.  He went 6.0 innings and allowed just two runs to also win his first major league start.

The Reds made moves involving four other players over the weekend.  They placed C-Ryan Hanigan (29) on the 15-day DL with a fractured thumb.  Then C-Corky Miller (34) was called up from Louisville to serve as the back-up catcher in Hanigan’s place.  OF-Chris Dickerson (28) was moved from the 15 to the 60-day disabled list.  Finally, SS-Paul Janish (27) was activated from the bereavement list.

The St Louis Cardinals optioned RHP-Noel Fernando Salas (25) to Memphis (AAA).  Such is the life.  Called up on Thursday, major league debut on Friday, and then back to Triple-A on Saturday.  His debut consisted of a clean shutout inning, so he’ll always have that.  He at least pitched in the show.

That’s something that LHP-Evan MacLane (27) can’t say.  He was called up by St Louis on Saturday and then optioned back to Memphis today.  No major league debut and not even a single stinking pitch in a big league game.

RHP-Adam Ottavino (24), who was called up by the Cardinals on Friday, did get a chance to pitch in the majors and made his debut on Saturday.  He lost the start after giving up 4 runs in 5.2 innings.

The Milwaukee Brewers called up LHP-Chris Capuano (31) from Nashville.  He hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2007, but he is scheduled to start on Thursday.  Here’s hoping for a triumphant return to the mound.  RHP-Claudio Vargas (31) was DFA’d to open up a roster spot for Capuano.

NL East:

The Florida Marlins designated LHP-Dan Meyer (28) for assignment and called up RHP-Jorge Sosa (33) from New Orleans (AAA).

OF-Justin Maxwell (26) was optioned to Syracuse by the Washington Nationals.  RHP-J.D. Martin (27) was called up to take his place on the 25-man roster.

NL West:

SS-Ryan Rohlinger (26) of the San Francisco Giants has been placed on the 15-day DL with a hamstring strain.  They also made a significant move by calling up C-Buster Posey (23).  Since Bengie Molina is apparently indispensable, Buster will be manning 1B from time to time.

More news on the Giants front.  San Francisco signed OF/DH-Pat Burrell (33) to a minor league contract and also optioned RHP-Waldis Joaquin (23) to Fresno.

The San Diego Padres placed SS-Everth Cabrera (23) on the 15-day disabled list with a sore hamstring.  They also optioned RHP-Adam Russell (27) to Portland.  To fill the two open roster spots, they activated RHP-Sean Gallagher (24) from the 15-day DL and called up 2B-Lance Zawadzki (25) from Triple-A.

2B-Nick Green (31) was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Los Angeles also optioned LHP-Scott Elbert (24) to Albuquerque and called up RHP-Travis Schlichting (25).

The Colorado Rockies released C-Paul Lo Duca (38).
