Roster Moves (6/4): Brett Anderson to DL, Danny Valencia to Minnesota

Yes it is June 12th and yes this edition of Roster Moves is long overdue.  I thought about skipping the last week instead of trying to catch up, but that idea just wasn’t sitting well.  So here are the moves made on June 4th for posterity if nothing else.

(moves after the jump)

AL Central:

The Minnesota Twins called up 3B-Danny Valencia (25) from Rochester and our Twins lead, Steve Fetch, questions why fans are excited about the move.

This isn’t a roster move as much as it is an update.  Cleveland Indians OF-Grady Sizemore (27) underwent microfracture surgery on his knee yesterday.  He is officially done for the season.  Cleveland also designated RHP-Jamey Wright (35) for assignment and called up RHP-Frank Herrmann (26) from Columbus.

AL East:

The Tampa Bay Rays signed Cuban 1B-Jose Julio Ruiz.  Tampa Bay also activated C-Kelly Shoppach (30) from the 15-day DL.

AL West:

The Oakland Athletics called up RHP-Henry Rodriguez (23) and LHP-Cedrick Bowers (32) from Sacremento (AAA).  They also optioned C-Landon Powell (28) and placed LHP-Brett Anderson (22) on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his pitching elbow.  The reports circulating right now suggest that Anderson will not need surgery and may only miss a handful of starts. On the flip side, if he going to need surgery eventually, perhaps it is better to get it out of the way now, lose him for the 2010 season, and hope he can return at some point in 2011.

NL Central:

The A’s weren’t the only team to move more than 2 players on Friday.  The Milwaukee Brewers activated 3B-Mat Gamel (24) from the 60-day DL and optioned him to Nashville.  They placed RHP-Marco Estrada (26) on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 31st, with shoulder fatigue and also released RHP-Claudio Vargas (31).

The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned LHP-Brian Burres (29) to Indianapolis.

NL East:

The New York Mets called up C-Omir Santos (29) and SS-Ruben Tejada (20) from Buffalo.  To make room on the roster, 2B-Luis Castillo (34) was placed on the 15-day disabled list and OF-Gary Matthews Jr. (35) was designated for assignment.  The team also placed LHP-Oliver Perez (28) on the 15-day disabled list with knee tendinitis.

The Atlanta Braves called up RHP-Craig Kimbrel (22) from Gwinnett to take the place of RHP-Takashi Saito (40) who was placed on the 15-day DL with hamstring strain.

NL West:

The San Diego Padres optioned C-Dusty Ryan (25) to Portland and activated C-Yorvit Torrealba (31) from the restricted list.

The San Francisco Giants activated RHP-Brandon Medders (30) from the 15-day disabled list and outrighted him to Fresno.  They also optioned OF-John Bowker (26) to Fresno and called up, recently acquired, OF-Pat Burrell (33).
