Roster Moves (6/5): Tommy Hunter called up, Zack Wheeler on DL

The first day back to work after a vacation is always an adventure.  I spend much of the time wondering why I went on vacation in the first place and am left beaten down (mentally) by the time I wrap things up and call it a day.  It’s one of the few downsides to having a job where I am the only one in the company who does the mix of things that I do, but I can’t complain.  Our sand volleyball team scored a convincing victory this evening which is always a plus.  When it comes to my writing however, such days do take their toll on me so tonight I was only able to “catch up” on one day of roster moves.  Hopefully I can make more tangible headway tomorrow evening.

(moves after the jump)

AL Central:

The Minnesota Twins activated RHP-Pat Neshek (29) from the 15-day DL and optioned him to Rochester.

AL East:

The Toronto Blue Jays signed OF-Dewayne Wise (32) to a minor league contract.

The Boston Red Sox called up OF-Josh Reddick (23) from Triple-A.  RHP-Scott Atchison (34) was optioned to Pawtucket to make room on the roster.

AL West:

The Texas Rangers called up RHP-Tommy Hunter (23) from Oklahoma City to make a spot start.  Hunter proceeded to pitch a 5-hit complete game.  RHP-Pedro Strop (24) was optioned to Oklahoma City to clear a spot on the roster.

NL Central:

After being DFA’d by the Yankees on May 28th, OF-Randy Winn (36) found a new home and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals.  To make room for their new acquisition, they optioned OF-Jon Jay (25) to Memphis.  Also in Cardinals news, RHP-Kyle Lohse (31) was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

NL East:

The New York Mets activated LHP-Jon Niese (23) from the 15-day disabled list.

The Washington Nationals released C-Chris Coste (37) and called up C-Jamie Burke (38) from Syracuse.  Coste recently underwent Tommy John surgery in May and was lost for the season anyway.  He’s been an effective backup catcher in limited duty during the previous four seasons, so despite the advanced age, he should find himself back on a major league roster once he is healthy.  Also in Nats catching news, Carlos Maldonado (31) broke his thumb and was placed on the 15-day DL.

NL West:

The San Francisco Giants placed RHP-Zach Wheeler (20) on the minor league disabled list thanks to a torn fingernail.  The Giants 1st round pick in the 2009 draft has scuffled in his first professional season with Augusta (Low-A) in the South Atlantic League.  His primary problem leading to the 5.06 ERA has been an unsightly 5.7 BB/9, but he has put up strong H/9 and SO/9 ratios (7.1 and 11.1 respectively).  The control may not be in place yet, but the stuff certainly is.  Here’s hoping he recovers quickly and continues on with his development.
