Welcome to the July 7th edition of Roster Moves. Today’s edition features a minor trade and twelve other teams getting into the transaction action. I am in the midst of a massive project at work so what follows is straight forward information with zero opinion or analysis.
(moves after the jump)
The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired RHP-Sean Gallagher (24) from the San Diego Padres for cash considerations.
The Chicago White Sox placed RHP-Jake Peavy (29) on the 15-day disabled list and called up RHP-Jeff Marquez (25) from Charlotte to take his place. Peavy completely tore his right latissimus muscle and is seeking opinions on whether or not to have surgery. Either way it seems likely that his season has come to the end.
The Toronto Blue Jays signed Venezuelan RHP-Adonis Cardona (16) to a rumored signing bonus of $2.8 million.
The Houston Astros signed Dominican OF-Ariel Ovando (16). His signing bonus is believed to be between $2.6 and $2.8 million which, according to Baseball America, is the most the team has ever paid to an amateur player.
The St. Louis Cardinals placed RHP-Adam Ottavino (24) on the 15-day disabled list and called up LHP-Evan MacLane (27) from Memphis. Ottavino hit the DL due to a shoulder strain and the move was made retroactive to July 4th.
The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned RHP-Daniel McCutchen (27) to Indianapolis.
The Florida Marlins optioned RHP-Chris Volstad (23) to New Orleans, a move which Marlin Maniac lead writer Michael Jong questions. The team called up RHP-Burke Badenhop (27) to take Volstad’s spot on the 25-man roster.
The San Diego Padres released C-Eric Munson (32).
The Los Angeles Dodgers signed OF-Trent Oeltjen (27) to a minor league contract and also released OF-Timo Perez (35). At the major league level they activated RHP-Carlos Monasterios (24) from the 15-day DL and placed RHP-Ronald Belisario (27) on the restricted list.
The Colorado Rockies placed 1B-Todd Helton (36) on the 15-day disabled list. The move was made retroactive to June 5th as a result of back soreness. 1B-Brad Eldred (29) was called up from Colorado Springs to take Helton’s place on the roster.
