Recurring Ankle Injury Sidelines Ordonez

The Detroit Tigers have announced they are placing outfielder Magglio Ordonez on the 15 day disabled list.  Ordonez has been feeling the continued effects of a recent surgery to repair his right ankle.

The former All Star has not been the same player as years past, and he and the team attribute his lack of success to the lingering injury.

Ordonez, a lifetime .310 hitter, has only managed a line of .172/.226/.232 so far this season.

The original injury occurred during a game against the Toronto Blue Jays last July.  Ordonez fractured his ankle sliding into home plate, trying to score from first on a Miguel Cabrera double.

Detroit hopes that a stay on the DL will result in the return of a player more resembling the Magglio of old.

Even without Ordonez offering much production at all, the team has performed well on the offensive end. With the emergence of Alex Avila behind the plate and Brennan Boesch in right, the lineup has proven it can produce without the former Silver Slugger.

Ordonez made his appearances as the team’s right fielder and designated hitter, positions now filled by Boesch and the versatile Victor Martinez.
