The Cubs will get there most effective starter back when Matt Garza returns Monday night. Garza is set to come off the disabled list and start for Chicago against the Cincinnati Reds.
The 27 year old completed two successful side sessions this week before he was cleared to play by Cubs manager Mike Quade.
Garza was placed on the 15 day DL on the 18th of May because of an elbow contusion.
The righty has been Chicago’s best starter this year, maintaining a 3.72 ERA. Even after missing time, Garza continues to lead the team in strikeouts with 68. His K/9 rate of 10.99 ranks first in the bigs.
Chicago acquired Garza in a January trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.
No official roster move has been made, but Garza is expected to bump recent addition Rodrigo Lopez out of the Cubs rotation. Quade is hoping to use Lopez out of the pen as a swing man or possible spot starter.
