The San Diego Padres lost a key component to their league leading bullpen Thursday when they placed Luke Gregerson on the DL.  The reliever has a strained oblique muscle.

The injury occurred when Gregerson was warming up during Wednesday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

“I just felt something bad in my ribcage here on my left side,” said Gregerson. “I thought it was a cramp at first. I tried to throw one more. It felt exactly the same.

“Ak (bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds) saw me wince a little bit … He said “You have to shut it down. You don’t want to make it worse than it could be now. You don’t want to turn a 10-day thing into a two-month thing.”

Used primarily as the Padres 7th inning guy, Gregerson has maintained a 2.63 ERA over 30 appearances.  The right hander has been a regular in the Padres pen for the past two seasons, logging at least 75 innings each year while holding his career ERA at 3.14.

San Diego has filled Gregerson’s roster spot with Triple-A righty Evan Scribner.
