Twins Place Young on DL

Delmon Young had to be carted off the field last night after colliding with the left field wall.  The Twins announced that Young has a sprained ankle and has been placed on the 15 day disabled list.

As manager Ron Gardenhire noted, Young is very lucky that he only sprained his ankle.  The replays look like the injury could have been a whole lot worse.

In the 5th inning of last night’s contest against the Brewers, Young was tracking a fly ball off the bat of Yuniesky Betancourt.  The ball carried back near the wall, and Young was unable to make the catch.  He tried to stop himself from crashing into the wall, and his right foot took most of the impact, crumpling awkwardly.  Young dropped his glove immediately and made no attempt on the ball, falling in obvious agony.

Minnesota has scheduled an MRI for Monday that will determine the extent of the damage and to get a better idea of how long Young will be out.

"“Hopefully the MRI shows no ligament damage or anything,” Young said. “It’s not as bad as the sprain I had back in ’03, before the draft, but it’s the same foot, so hopefully that one doesn’t cause any problems for this one.”"

On the year Young has held a line of only .256/.281/.324, but he was heating up before his injury.  Young’s first stint on the DL was sandwiched between the 25 year old’s tough April and May.  However, in the month of June Young was able to maintain a .321 batting average.

The Twins have recalled outfielder Rene Tosoni from Triple-A to take Young’s spot on the roster.
