The Diamondbacks placed closer J. J. Putz on the disabled list Friday with elbow tendinitis.  Arizona hopes the right hander can return shortly after the All-Star break.

Putz hasn’t appeared for the Diamondbacks since Tuesday when he blew his 4th save of the season against the Indians.  The 34 year old underwent a CT scan Thursday that showed no structural damage in his throwing arm.

"“I don’t really know the technical medical part of it, but structurally as far as the major stuff, ligaments, everything is fine,” said Putz. “It’s just one of those things where it needs to calm down. It’s felt better since the injection, I’ve noticed a difference.”"

Currently tied for 4th in the majors with 21 saves, Putz has been solid for the Diamondbacks in 2011.  But, after a good April and outstanding May, Putz struggled in June.  He blew his first save on the first of the month and has only been able to complete 5 of his 9 opportunities in June.  His ERA climbed to 3.12.

David Hernandez is next in line for closing duties in Arizona.  He has notched 2 saves in 4 opportunities this season, and has some prior experience finishing games with the Orioles.

"“It’s unfortunate because we’re on a pretty tough road trip,” Putz said. “But David’s done a good job all year other than a little hiccup here and there. This will be a chance for him to get some late game experience for the future, and maybe that will help us in September. I try to find the positives in everything.”"

To replace Putz on their roster, the Diamondbacks have activated reliever Sam Demel from the DL.
