Jose Reyes Strains Hamstring

An MRI revealed that Mets shortstop Jose Reyes is dealing with a Grade 1 hamstring strain.  The Mets are considering their All-Star as day-to-day.

Reyes experienced tightness in his left hamstring Saturday while running the bases and was removed from the game before the third inning.  New York and their fans held their breath, expecting the worst due to Reyes’ injury past.

But the news they received was almost as good as it could get.  A Grade 1 strain is the lowest possible, and Reyes already said he was feeling better Sunday.

"“I think it’s good,” Reyes said. “Just a little bit of strain. Nothing big. I know we’re going to take it one day at a time and see what happens. Today when I got up I feel even better than yesterday. That’s very good news.”"

The Mets finish their season on the West Coast, and the club wants to see how Reyes’ injury responds to the trip.  With the All-Star break approaching, the team may be cautious with their shortstop.

"“We’ll just see how he responds and the symptoms he demonstrates over the next few days,” Mets GM Sandy Alderson said. “I’m sure he’ll want to play. I’m sure he’ll want to play in the All-Star Game, etc. That’s something we have to look at.”"

Alderson is certainly right; Reyes will want to get back on the field as soon as possible.  He’s having a career year and is set to become a free agent after the season.  Reyes is currently sporting an impressive line of .354/.398/.529 and leads the league in hits, triples and batting average.
