Jason Kendall’s Season Over; Career in Jeopardy

Thursday the Royals announced that catcher Jason Kendall’s ailing right shoulder will require more surgery.

The procedure will be similar to the one that the catcher went through last season.  Kendall will be out the rest of 2011 as well as next year, and the future of his career is in jeopardy.

“It takes him out of the picture for this year and for next year, and it’s more a quality-of-life surgery so he can at least have function in his shoulder,” Royals manager Ned Yost said.

During his last surgery, Kendall had three of his rotator cuff muscles reinserted after they had become torn off.  In his latest injury, the 37 year old again pulled one and a half of those muscles off.

Yost said the procedure was more about allowing Kendall to regain some function in his shoulder, not just for baseball but for everyday living.  He also noted that the likelihood of the reattached muscles holding again in a baseball setting isn’t very likely.

Kendall joined the Royals for the 2010 season after signing a two year $6 million deal with the club.  Last year he only managed a line of .256/.318/.297 in 118 games.  Kendall is a lifetime .288 hitter and 3 time All-Star.
